Major Craft Rod for All Purpose - 702H vs 68FR vs 68BB

Featured Replies

I am looking to get a rod for my all purpose Swimbait/Soft Plastic fishing under 3 ounces. I fish a 5.8 bellows gill, tiny klash, bbz rat 50, citizen 6, and occasionally a frog. I am deciding between the Major Craft Days/Benkei 702H, Frog Game 68FR, and Big Bait 68BB. Has anyone fished these and have any opinions? Looking for a longer handle as well. Can't find any information online but the specs of all 3 of these models are attractive. Main thing I am concerned about is lure ratings, as I have heard people saying these rods are overpowered. Thanks!

I have a few Days and Days 360 rods, 692M, 692MH, 702X, 360 610M, and 360 6'6MH. I don't agree with the sentiment that they are overpowered regarding their ratings, they all capably handle the lowest listed weight range. But like a conquest or xtasay, you can push past the upper limits and still be effective which might be what you've been hearing. Out of what I have, the 702X would fish everything you asked about. I throw a chad shad, 7" scottsboro beast hook swimmer, and a frog with it the most, though the longer handle makes it my 2nd or travel frog rod.

I ordered them with little knowledge beforehand and was a little nervous, but the first time I had them on the water, it became apparent that they are the "best bang for the buck" rod I've ever fished. I even ventured out into a couple salt rods because they offered rare combinations of length, power, and action in traditional bass fishing options that have been excellent. Instantly, MC has jumped to the top of all my future rod considerations and can't say enough about em.

How does the regular action fish with both beast hooks and treble hooks? Do you think they can fish down to a 1/2 ounce frog? What reel do you use? I was going to put a bantam 150 mgl and was wondering how it would balance.

The 702x has loads of power. Not an issue at all to drive home a big beast hook. If anything, I was worried about pulling trebles in the beginning, but there’s enough give there to keep them pinned. I don’t recall ever losing a chop glide or big spoon fish. For such a powerful rod it still has enough tip/last third to be both an excellent distance and accurate caster. The RF action and power remind me a bit of the expride 7’3 XH though it’s ultimately more powerful. I’ve run a bantam on it and it felt great, last year I swapped some reels around using both a tat 200 and curado DC. All 3 have balanced and cast well. I’ve been mostly throwing the Bully Wa 2 frog with it and would say that it’s at the bottom end of a not thinking about it casting stroke. To me it’s like a stronger older brother to a MB tequila bacarac and expride 7’3 xh. I’ve only run braid to leader or straight braid with it.

These definitely have my attention. Where’s the best place to order major craft rods?

would you say it is too much for mostly throwing tk? I would mostly throw tk and frog and bellows gill 3.8 and 5.8

  • Super User

I don't know. Never threw a tiny klash or a bellows gill. My guess is that the tk would be good to great and the 3.8" bellows would be close to not effective.

Have you ever pushed out of the recommended range for a 702X? I'm thinking of baits like the s-waver 200 at 3.5oz or other glides in that weight range, of course I'd be lob casting anything that heavy.

Sounds like its pretty powerful from your description so it might be good to stick with 3X trebles and power fish in as much as possible?

Thanks

I haven't done it but feel like it would be no problem. I honestly haven't gotten a fish on an s-waver since 23, but also haven't thrown it all that much. The chop of the spro kgb has just been a better hard bait producer for me recently. The 702X would certainly be able to drive the hooks and I would guess lob it just fine. If you remember to bring it up after ice out, I can check.

I might have one myself by the time the ice is out for either of us ). It looks like they are $150 on

JDM Tackle Heaven so I'll probably buy them from there. I'm not sure about tariffs though.
