Another FG knot question

Featured Replies

I can tie the FG knot pretty well after some trial and error. Early on after locking it in I was finishing it off with 6 or 8 half hitches until I learned the Rizutto finish. Anyway to my question. What is considered "one wrap"? Is "One" considered each time you go over-under your mainline above and below the leader? Or is "one wrap" considered every other 'over-under the mainline? Sorry, there was no easy way to word this question.

I count each one as a wrap. 16-18 total has given me the best results for a proper cinch.

I count each as a half wrap and do 16 which to some would be 32. With 15# braid to 10# fluorocarbon leader I never have had a break off at the knot and where I fish there are numerous break offs daily.

Thanks guys. The Youtube videos aren't very clear on what constitutes "one wrap".

I also count each half wrap as one and aim to get up to 32 half wraps (dependent upon the lines sizes). I also use the Rizutto finish.

I learned to tie from this video and he clearly counts each turn as a wrap. Obviously others might not. So it’s a valid question.

One of my problems is if I go for a period of time and don't tie an FG I forget which lines to pull to put tension on when I seat the knot. If I pull the wrong ones it's back to the drawing board and start all over.

In the video he states that all the "coils" have to tighten down. When you do too many it's hard to get them all to tighten down. Too much of a good thing, more is not always better. He has found 16 to be optimum. Not 32. This doesn't mean 32 won't work; obviously some can make it work. It means that adding more than the optimum number is counterproductive.

I know this is controversial, but I believe he is right. The knot depends on deforming the leader and to get that too many wraps interferes with doing that.
