What to do with broken Avid?

Featured Replies

I have an older Avid 6'9" MLXF with the tip being broken two inches down along with the second eye below the tip being mashed.

The tip top eye looks fine. I've already done the warranty thing.

Could anyone here use the eyes or handle parts? Free if you want it.

Any random out of the box ideas of uses or should I just toss it?

Find a local shop to repair it by putting on a new tip and replacing the mashed guide. It will be fishable. Give it to someone just starting out if you won't use it.

Totally fixable and will be 98% of new.

Then again, why not warranty it again?

What do you mean by warranty again?

Avids have a 15 year warranty. Even if not a warranty claim, they have a $60 service program that I think just gets you a new one when you break one. That’s what you’d pay someone to fix it or so.

If we're talking about the same thing... I already contacted them (last summer) and did the service program/warranty thing. I gave them the serial number etc. I ended up upgrading. My Avid was older so I think it was $50 plus the difference in rod price to upgrade. Unless I'm misunderstanding you I think I'm done with anything St. Croix would do for me.

to me, if the option is give them $60 and you get a new Avid or you throw that one away I’d at least get the new one. It’s worth far more than what you’d pay to get the new one and you could sell it. Or use it as a fishing rod. Not sure why you wouldn’t do that.

I'm not sure of exactly what the condition of the blank is, but if it's broken, the Ralph O'quin process works and most of the time the rod fishes as well as new. Many don't believe it but I've repaired many rods this way and as I said, most fish just as well as new.

I have one fly rod my son really likes and it has been repaired in two different places and he still fishes it and loves it.

I've got two rods I cut off 1" above the 1st guide that I use when I'm spooling new line on reels.

I had Delaware Valley Tackle fix a rod tip of mine several years back… they did a great job 👍
