Shimano Convergence 7MF (2 piece) Spinning Rod

Featured Replies

All, my local Farm and Fleet is discontinuing these rods and I can purchase one for $ 40.00. Have any of you used this model? For the price I thought it might be a nice travel rod for multi species. I understand for the price it will not be a SC or G.Loomis. but would like to hear from actual owners if they thought it was worth the price.

The Convergence is a nice rod especially at that price and the two piece is compact for travelling. I would take a look at the new Sellus (the black one) . It's a bit more expensive and also available in a two piece. It's a fantastic rod for the price.

I had the two piece and honestly, returned it. It was a nice rod but was a bit too stiff for what I was looking for, but a nice rod. At $40 definitely worth the buy.

If I was seriously debating on whether I would buy this rod or not, I'd save my money for a better rod.

I've owned a bunch of these low to mid tier Shimano rods over the years and none of them are anything special. I throw a cheap reel on them and use them as loaners or back of the truck rods. They're decent enough to bother owning, but not good enough for me to care about losing.

@brophog, I just plan on throwing a Daiwa Regal on it and using it as a travel rod. Would not be heart broken if it broke.

@Motoboss, was yours the 7MF 2 piece model?

Yes it was. I bought mine through Tackle Wearhouse at a considerable higher price too. Good buy at $40.00.

Yes @brophog . For a $ 40.00 travel rod I thought what the heck. I haven't been able to try it yet so
I'm looking forward to it.

Post up your thoughts with the new rod. I think you’ll find it a great “all purpose” rod.

@Motoboss, I got to try it out last night at a local quarry and caught a 2 lb. LM bass on it. I am pleased with it. I primarily bought it as a travel rod and a rod that if something happened to it I wouldn't be upset. For a 2 piece rod I thought the sensitivity was decent. I made some hard casts seeing if it would separate and it didn't. I think I'll be more than happy with it especially for what it costs. Thanks, Randy

In my opinion, in the overwhelming majority of modern rods these aren't major issues anymore. There is some debate on which styles of joints reduce any potential loss of sensitivity the most, but my feeling is that our rod setups now tend to be so sensitive that we have plenty to spare.

My only complaint with 2 piece rods is that they're not more readily available in this country but it's hard for me to put too much blame on producers, distributors and retailers when there is such a strong stigma against 2 piece rods, especially in bass fishing. I think for the most part they are just following market sentiment in this regard. I, too, once was very against 2 piece rods but there was a time when there were very good reasons for that. The technology and construction has changed a lot over time, though, and I think opinions will eventually shift as well.

Glad it’s working out for you. It’s hard to recommend lower end rods but I felt it was a decent value. And for what you paid it's a win!
