EWG vs straight shank

I think this may have to do with hooksetting

That's well thought out. I'm 6'4, an avid weightlifter, and I have a bad habit of swinging like Bruce Banner when he's angry. I could be creating my issues with a worm on an EWG.

My disclaimer. It took me a minute (like two years or longer) to come to the conclusion I'm about say.

"An EWG hook is causing anglers to loose fish" is a complete myth. Here is my reasing.....

I would also state that there are too many factors to figure in, like rod power, line choice, how hard you set the hook, etc., to make a complete and bullet proof answer to this.

So, for me, I have lost more fish on the two hooks on the left than anything else. They are my main two flipping hooks. One is an Owner flipping hook and the other is a Trokar flipping hook. The two on the right are my main two worm hooks, Owner offset wide gap and a Ryugi Infini EWG. I believe these are all size 4/0.

The discussion on this always surrounds the size of the gap between the hook point and the eye. The gap is of course smaller on an EWG. I don't really loose fish on EWGs though so I really don't get the argument but I do understand the thought process.

To make my point as to why it took me a few years to let go of the idea that EWGs are bad for hook ups and at loosing fish, see the small hook at the top in the pic below. Its a Ryugi Hobbit size #2 and to this day I have never lost a fish on it, dink to 5lb'ers. I started using it about 2 years ago with BFS soft plastic. The whole hook will fit inside the gap of a 4/0 flipping hook or EWG. So if the argument is based solely on the size of gap, that little EWG Hobbit totally changed my perspective on it.

I'm a really big fan of EWG hooks as well. Im fishing around grass and wood almost all of the time so I really like to skin hook the top of the plastic to make my hook more snag resistant. I've never felt that I lost a fish because of my hook. I will say, when I'm fishing a shaky head, that's the only time I prefer to not have an EWG.
