Boat Carpet Alternatives

Featured Replies

I could use some advice...

I have an old Tracker I use on a small lake. It stays tied to a dock, so it takes a beating from the weather. Most of the carpet - casting decks, etc - is in decent shape, but the floor carpeting is beyond nasty. I pulled up the carpet on the floor, and the wood is in decent shape. The boat is trolling motor only, so I spend 95% of my time on the casting deck. I am only interested in function. Appearance is not an issue. What are my alternatives to putting carpet back down?

Is paint an option? If so, what should I look for in a paint and how do I make it non-slip?

Has anybody used the self-adhesive EVA foam decking from Amazon? Good choice/bad choice?

Thanks very much for your help!

Glued down carpet will always be a problem because it holds water and dirt.

I simply made two changes.... 1) is to never glue carpet down. All the carpet in my boat now is held in place with velcro so I can remove it for cleaning and drying out the boat. And 2) I now use outdoor putt putt golf course carpet which is designed differently. It comes with a foam backing that makes standing on deck more comfortable.

And as for non-slip paint is a simple thing of buying the grit size you want and mixing it into the paint so when it dries you will have a non-slip surface. Home Depot sells various paint additives for similar results.

I can't help you with install on the hard surface, but I can vouch for the vinyl/polymer interior. My boat came with it when I bought it 10 years ago. At first I was skeptical because I had always had marine carpet in a boat.

Safe to say I'm never going back to carpet again.

Terrazzo tile looks nice 😁😁

There are all kinds of rubber, EVA foam, and Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate decking rolls and squares. There's even pour-in-place rubber.

I imagine that other than cost, the biggest concern would be keeping the deck as cool as possible in the sun.

I like carpet it’s timeless and fits a bass boat so well. That said when I redo my carpet I’m going with hydroturf Eva foam. It’s softer. Repels water. Dries fast. And is cooler. It’s just superior to carpet in every way

Thanks for all the feedback. I really like the velcro idea but I’m avoiding carpet. In my situation, it’s a guaranteed pain. I thought I wanted the evo foam, but I’m reading a lot of reviews for the retail stuff complaining the self-adhesive released allowing the material to curl.

I’m leaning toward a paint like Ames Safe-T-Deck. Any reasons why paint is a really bad idea? Thanks.

I don’t like painted surfaces, but that’s a personal thing.

I put EVA foam on my trailer fenders in place of the carpet and I love it - easy to clean and has spent 2 years in the Arizona sun without any sign of peeling (cheap Amazon stuff).

When I get around to recarpeting my decks, I plan to foam the bottom/cockpit of my Ranger.
