Small square bill recommendation

Featured Replies

Here's the situation: I'm bank fishing rip rap for smallmouth, making long casts parallel to the bank with a long 9'6 ml rod, trying to keep the crank in the sweet spot about four to 6 feet deep ticking the rocks. I use a lot of techniques on this fishery, this is just one but it requires a small enough crankbait to match the rod. A 2" "shallow shad rap 5" is what I'm using now but despite being rated 3-6 foot it's running on the low side of that range with straight fluorocarbon. I need a good deflecting squarebill about that same size that runs a tad deeper (the bill on the regular shad 5 looks like it will get hung up). Any suggestions?

OSP Blitz or Blitz MR. 2", deflects well, high float, unfortunately $25.

If you are fishing rocks why not use a crank with a longer lip instead of a square bill?

Sounds like you’re just looking for a deeper diving 2” squarebill, which are plentiful. There’s no rule against throwing something that is rated to dive deeper than the depth of the water you’re fishing. I do this to ensure contact with bottom and/or structure deflection. I would pickup a few balsas rated between 7-10’ dives, and then work my reel speed and rod tip to keep it where I wanted in the water column, deflecting off the tops of rocks frequently without diving into cracks, ideally.

The 6th Sense Curve Finesse Squarebill in Black Magic has been my most productive crankbait last year and this year so far. And just like the fuzzy baits, I can't tell you why it gets bit, but it does. I need to give Bass Reaper on YouTube credit for this bait/color.
