Just curious if this rod would be a good choice for frogs and versatile enough to decently throw some swim/glide baits. Was also looking at the St Croix 7’4” heavy fast but the weight spec tops out at 1 1/2 oz and I like to throw an s-waver 168 and that’s 1 5/8 oz. Open to other suggestions 350$ and under as well. Thank you.

Try searching on Google. Several reviews of the rod. It's one I would have loved to purchase but couldn't find one in my budget when I searched years ago. Supposedly a great rod for what it was designed for.

One poster in this thread fished a 1.5 oz. magnum title shot with a beefy trailer with two different (expensive) rods. He preferred the 736.

The CH 736 is an excellent frog fishing rod. I can't say if the same rod would be good choice for glide baits however since I don't fish those. Depending on the type of swimbaits your throwing the 736 could work. Swimbaits like Gambler Big Ez's are the ones I'm referring to. If your throwing a swimbait with trebles, the X-Fast tip of the 736 would not be ideal in my opinion.

Yeah that makes sense. Would probably want a different rod for treble baits.

The 736 is perhaps the gold standard heavy cover frog rod. It has an action of extra fast.........

My deep research also kept bringing up a competing expride 7'3" xxh. It is a slower action. I didn't want this moderate bend in a frog rod but others love it. I believe this slower action would be better with double duty swimbait use.

The Champ 736 was the last Dobyns model I purchased. I actually talked to Gary by phone to inquire about the tip and how it loaded. The tip is active and responsive as well as easy to load. Guess what? It is all of that. So it has great castability with serious power. I think 1.5 oz. would come close to maxing it out.

I decided to get crazy like I tend to do and order the p5 tequila baccarac. My good buddy says it’s his favorite rod and knew what I was looking for. Probably won’t throw a frog on this but I think this will allow me to throw all the heavier baits I wanted to try but couldn’t. Thanks for all the input.
