I've had my shimano curado 100 dhsv for about 2 months used it a few times and

yesterday i went bass fishing and had a 4 lb fish and my drag was tight and the fish was still

taking my line. I would reel in harder and it wouldnt reel in much line. I noticed my drag wasnt working.

Its only been used like 4-5 times, i can literally have the drag tight, and pull line out fairly easy.

Just want to know if i can fix this problem myself to avoid taking it to shimano.

Are you using braided line, if so did you use a backing before loading the spool?

That 's the problem, no backing. When spooling in braided line you should always spool in nylon backing first.

if i respool with backing would that fix the problem? or am i screwed

That depends on how much braided line you think you need and the diameter of the braid. You can use that same line diameter in a mono backing, or you can just make a couple of wraps of electricians tape and then tie on the braid.

It is mostly that you have a slick line tied to a slick spool arbor. If you have the ported spool, the tape will aid in keeping water from filtering down onto the spools shaft and into the crank area via the pinion gear.

Fill one third of the spool with cheap nylon ( that way the connection knot between the braided and the nylon will never touch your thumb ) voilá, drag problem solved.

i just put mono backing (same diam. as braid) i did about 1/3 of backing and the rest of braid. Obviously i noticed no matter how tight your drag is your always going to be able to pull some line, but it sure made a big difference with mono backing.

Man, you will always be able to pull line no matter how tight the drag is, you have more pulling power than what the drag can take, that 's exactly the function of the drag, to slip before you reach the breaking point of the line.

The reason why you set the drag to a certain poundage of pressure ( 1/3 of the poundage test of the line ) is to protect the line, the rod and the reel gearing from breaking, even the reel has a fail safe mechanism, those plastic gears you find in reels are designed to break before you damage the metal gears ....... a fishing reel is very far from being a winch.

I too had the same problem with an older 201 bsf curado and I was using mono on it at the time.  A friend of mine showed me a simple thing that fixed the problem.  He backed the drag and the casting control knob off all the way, set a couple of extra breaks, put on a heavy Rattle Trap and casted it out.  On the retrieve I could feel something loosen up in the reel.  When I got the lure back in, I set the reel up as I normally would and it was now fixed, no more drag issue.  The reel had somehow gotten into a bind and need to have some pressure taken off.  This all could be a coincidence but it worked.

really? so basically all u did was loosen the drag all the way, and same with the brake system, and just cast a lure out and retrieve it back in?

Ill try that see what results i get.

I release my drag when I am finished fishing for the day I understand it helps prevent this problem. Jump in on this Reel Mech.

Don't know what to jump in on. I thought the original post was about drags not working and we had figured out that the angler was using braided line and hadn't backed the braid with anything.

I don't know were FishTank figures that there was something binding up in the reel as that wasn't the original question..

Got me all confused for sure. So I'll just stand aside and let you all figure it out..

yea reelmech u were right about the backing because when i went to work i looked at the power pro braid we sell and it had a booklet. It did say to either put the tape on the barrel or put mono backing. I never did this because my sufix braid doesnt come with a booklet and i was a first time braid user to i never did this.

I did respool the way u told me using mono backing and it did make the drag alot tighter.
