What makes a good top water rod

Featured Replies

I see i think G Loomis makes a rod just for top water fishing what is the specs on that rod. What is dferent from a top water rod than a diferent rod.

I imagine it has a slower action which will give the tip a slower feel.  This aids in working the baits correctly and works as a shock absorber to help prevent treble hooks from tearing out when fighting the fish.

I like using a short grip or pistol grip for topwaters with a med action  mod tip  6 foot is great 5-6 is ok as long as it aint long range casting!!!

This would depend on what type of topwater?

Buzzbaits I want a med power med/fast action rod in the 7 foot range with a burner reel on it.

Pop-R type baits I want a shorter rod with a faster action so I can pop it easily.

Wake and walk the dog baits I also want a shorter rod with a little more give which makes it easier to walk the dog.  Usually this will double as my jerk bait rod.

thanks for the info i will be on the look out for a good med. action rod. thanks. anyone else.

I have the 782 ? IMX, the 6'6" version of the rod Alpster described. It is an AWESOME finesse/ jerkbait rod. I have it spooled with flouro, so I haven't used it for topwater, but I will try to get another someday, and spool the next Scorpion MG with mono, for the topwater combo. This combo is by far the best rod/reel combo I own, and love to use.

AllStar used to make the Zell Rowland Top Water Special.  I have one that I use for practically all of my TW fishing.  6'6" and the action is fine for almost everything.  The only exception is a buzzbait or a spook.  It also is an excellent small crankbait rod.  They no longer have this model rod, but I believe they make it under a different model number.

I use an old BPS Bionic Blade IM6 pistol grip rod for all topwater fishing except buzzbaits.  For Buzzers I've got a 7' Allstar Med/fast rod with a higher speed reel.

In general, I would suggest 6 1/2' or 7' Medium Power/ Moderate Action or Fast Action with a soft tip. I have an an all-around rod for medium weight treble hook lures, including top water. Mine is a Medium Power/ Fast Action rod with a soft tip: St. Croix Avid AC66MF. I also use this rod for spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. (The tip is too soft for soft plastics and jigs).

I like a fast action rod with a soft tip for topwaters. My all time favorite is an old Team Daiwa, George Cochran topwater/twitchin rod. 6' medium power, moderate-fast action, soft tip and a pistop grip. I've had it for at least 12 years, maybe longer. They no longer make anything like it.

It's perfect for Pop-R's, Jr Spooks, Torpedos, original Rapala's, and other small topwaters. It's a bit under-powered for big spooks, and way under-powered for buzzbaits and frogs.

Any medium power rod with some give in the tip would make a good topwater rod, except for buzzbaits and frogs. Those baits require a lot more rod, in my opinion.

Cheers,

GK
