Fireline mad as than heck!!

Featured Replies

Man am I mad, new Fireline on a baitcaste. Tied on a NEW Bagley deep diving crankbait, suspending one at that, made the first cast the fricken line broke at about 40 feet, ZOOM the bait was gone and lost.

Decided well I would use a spinner bait,   cast and darned if it did not happen again!!!!!!

Ok at this point I am thinking man this sucks, bite my tongue, this was just a freak thing.

Tie on my 3rd bait a War Eagle spinner and I will be a snake in the grass if  it did not threepeat. Fricken S.O.B. I was and still am mad as hell, missed away $15.00 worth of lures in just minutes!!!!

Yes, I am going to send a sample to the maker and my complaint. This maybe just one time but I certainly am thinking nomore with a baitcaster.

Anyone else had troubles with it?

What weight was it?  I had heard that there were several people complaining of the same thing...  I think that it was a problem of heat getting to it when it was shipped, and it caused it to become brittle.  Much more so than it should have!  Especially at the price they charge for it!  Best thing to do, it send it to berkeley, and they will deal with the matter, by either sending you a new spool of line, or refunding your money.  I don't know what you would do about the lures, but I am sure they could work something out...  It is a damned  shame that this kind of thing happens, but it's not all to common with different manufactures!  I was having problems with my berkeley vanish line, and they offered to have me send it in, and they would test it, and send me a new spool.  I didn't feel like the hassle, but the jesture was more than pleasing!  Basically, I was having fraying issues, which could also be caused by heat.  Not sure though!  Either way, they will right the wrong.

In the future, I would suggest you get some spire wire braided, and you will have less backlashing, and lose less lures...  I have the monofiliment, and I love it!  Best stuff in the world.  ;)  JMHO.  Hope some of that helps you out!

What knot were you using???

FWIW I used Fireline for years without anything like that happening.

I started using Power Pro this year and I like it so far.

If you fish other Berkley products (XT, XL, Big Game), call the customer service department at Pure Fishing or contact Berkly through e-mail (http://www.berkley-fishing.com/about_contactinfo.php) and ask them to send you replacement line.

Otherwise, give the Yo-Zuri Hybrid or Hybrid Ultra Soft a try. That's what I'm using and I like it.  8-)

I have it on one of my Stradics. I have been using it with soft jerkbaits. It seems like good stuff! I bought the #6 based on your recomendation.  ;)

I second that one.  I tried this line due to RW advice and it is great.  I think I may make the switch, I do like the P Line flourclear also though.

I do not fish any berkley line whatsover anymore.  I lost most my fish on Berkley line, just lost all faith in their line.  Although, I hear the XT is good but I'm done with Berkley  >;)

Most Bekley line has always been very good stuff, in my experience with it. Transition, in it's first incarnation was not so good, but is now pretty good line. XL and XT are staples in my collection. Vanish is good. Sensation is good on a baitcaster, not so good for spinning. Ditto for Big Game line.

Fireline may very well be the worst line they've ever made. I don't know, Iron Silk may be worse. I haven't decided which is worse, and don't really care because I won't be using either line for any application.

If you want braid, go ahead and get the real thing. I've been using PowerPro and Spiderwire on my two muskie rods. I like both, but when it's time to re-spool, I'm leaning towards PowerPro for both. I think it's a better value.

Sounds like you like cranks and spinnerbaits. May I suggest something other than braid. I've been using Vanish and Sufix Elite on my crank and spinnerbait rods, and have been pleased with both. I like something harder to see for cranking. There are quite a few very good lines available. Fireline is not one of them.

Cheers,

GK

I've had 14# Fireline on a spinning reel for three years and never had a problem. Only thing I don't like is it doesn't cast as far as I'd like. The line just doesn't flow off the spool as smoothly as mono.

No reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Berkley makes fine products.  Fireline OTOH... :-/

If you want braid, there are plenty of true braids out there.  Sufix, PLine Spectrex IV, PowerPro.

Try Cabela's Ripcord Si or Si Plus. I 've tried some of the fore mentioned and these have worked the best for me.

made the first cast the fricken line broke at about 40 feet,

Ozarkie

Reading this leads me to believe there was a sudden stop to the cast that snapped the line.  Maybe you should check your reel or work on your casting technique.

I was thinking the exact same thing.  Of course the line could be defective, but braids and fireline have a tendency to dig into the spool, that's why most braid users on baitcasters go for the heavier weight. I use nothing less than 50# power pro on all baitcasters.

So what happens, and yes it most definitly has happened to me, is that the line dug into the spool, and when you fired the cast out it hit that spot, the spool stopped suddenly and the line broke.  So you cursed and swore and tied on another lure, but never cleared the jam on the spool.  so of course it happened again.  three times is the charm.  You gave it yet another shot with the same result.

Anytime you have something like this happen check that spool.  My method is to tie on another lure and GENTLY make a soft cast.  If it stops suddenly the line won't break and now you have located the jam.  Just pull out a few yards of line to make sure all is well.   But make your next cast an easy one just to make sure.

99% of the time, it's not that the line is defective, it's that it dug into the spool.

good luck and have fun,

avid.

Power Pro or Sufix, forget the others...

I agree! I allways said that fireline sucks! (please let's not start a discussion but that's my opinion) ;)

Dont forget Tuffline which is very similar to PP.

Not Fireline but I recall a day when I was fishing with a Rod and reel combo that I just put some new Stren on.  1st or 2nd cast of the day the line popped on the cast.  Reeled in and started to retie.  As I was retying the line broke as I was cinching down.

Stripped off more line, tried retying and the same thing. Something was obviously wrong with that line.  wound up parking the combo for the day and threw the line away when I got home later.

I hate Fireline, I have had nothing but trouble with it. Go out and buy some Spiderwire Stealth. I have never had any problems at all with it.

Was not the KNOT, the line broke at different places and it was not due to sudden stop. #14 test just broke in mid cast. I have used this brand of line a lot, especially river fishing when I use a leader and just loose the leader in place of the line breaking elsewhere.

I will be sending it back to Berkley this week. Don't know what they will do about the lures. I am glad I was not using some of those $15.00 plus lures!!!

Do what the others told , switch 2 power pro or suffix and ur problems will be solved

I had very bad experiences with Fireline in the past.

I had a knot slip on a leader earlier today that send a huge swimbait flying over my head in midcast...i thought i broke the pole until i saw the bait flying..

I'm a newbie here, but have one other thought. Check the eyelets on your rod by slidding a Q Tip through each one. I had a similar experience once, and found the ceramic in an eyelet was chipped, and cutting my line. Good luck!

Well I had it happen again lastnight casting a spinner...20lb test fireline snapped in half...
