I need some serious help with my reel!

Featured Replies

(Baitcaster) It has sand in it I think every other cast or so I go to cast and the line goes out about 10-15 yards and comes to a hault without a backlash, every now and then it'll go out fine but more often then not it stops it mid cast, it's still ok for pitchin' but i need distance it's my crank and spinner reel, what do I do? I sprayed both reels with WD-40 in the cracks and stuff when I got back from where I was fishing where it was sandy but this one seems to be locked up my only thoughts is it's sand :-/ I've never taken apart my reel and am timid to as the last one i took apart never worked properly again... suggestions? oh also I got so frustrated out on the boat with it that I was trying to get the line wet a good 50 yards into the spool on the retrieve and one time when it haulted i got so mad i just dunked the whole thing in the lake very quickly and soked, i realize now that was a stupid idea :'(, so where do I go from here guys???

What make, and model number...

Check your PM's

Because I don't service any house brand (Cabela's, BPS) or signature (Rick Clunn, Kevin Vandam, etc.) reels.

I would recommend you contact  for service of this brand.

is there any minor things I could try and do? does this sound like a ssand in the reel issue? the way it just stops in mid cast...

I'm thinking it is a baitcaster. I would take the spool out, clean every thing you can reach and oil it ( not with WD 40 ). See what happens.

Otherwise like RM said.

Why not try turning the handle 100 times very fast.

You'll pulverize the sand and polish the gears at the same time

You know I'm kidding right?

RIGHT??????????????

Ohhhh Avid......Bammmmm there goes every nylon idler gear in the reel.  ;)

sets hooks all day,

I would say yes to the sand inside the reel. The spraying of the WD-40, and then the dunking into the lake water didn't help either. That reel needs more than just the spool removed and wiped off. The reel need broken down, cleaned, and re-lubed..No getting around it.

If it's a BPS reel, it should be really easy to take out the spool if you just look at your manual.  My first baitcaster was a Rick Clunn and I took the whole thing apart down to the clutch switch to relube it.  They should have a complete assembly diagram in the manual if you REALLY don't want to send it back to the store.

If it's from BPS, though, they're fantastic with workin on their own reels.  If it's your first year owning it, it's even still under warranty!
