Cabelas baicasting reels

Featured Replies

Hello, I recently bought a cabelas prodigy bait casting reel (made by daiwa) and was wondering if anyone else had them and what they thought of them. I was choosing between this and a pflueger trion and wanted to get something that would last a long time. Both were highly recommended and both were right in my price range. Anyone had one for awhile that can give me some feedback? Or any thoughts pflueger or cabelas reels in general? Thanks!

Welcome to the board,

I'm pretty sure the Prodigy was a total redesign for 2007 so I don't know if you will get much useful feedback as far as longevity. The old Prodigy's received mixed reviews on the site, but the new one appears to be an Advantage in Cabela's clothes so it should last you a long time if you take care of it.

Thanks for the reply! I still wonder about the quality of Pflueger reels, anyone have any thoughts on those? I also noticed in reviews about the cabelas reel (after I bought it of course) that ppl are having problems with the gears going out. That worries me a bit.

Welcome aboard!

We have lots of Plueger fans, I'm sure a few will speak up shortly.

Hey I had the old Prodigy( Silstar produced) and it was a great reel. I now have a Cabela's zx and it is also a great product

My favoritwe reel I own is Pflueger Trion BC and it is a dream reel!!!!!

BPS and Cabelas both offer some really terriific house brand reels :o

Thanks for the feedback guys, I think I will keep the Cabelas reel, the "lifetime" guarantee and the cabelas store being 5 minutes from my house are 2 big resons. Plus, I do really like it. I havent been bass fishing in about 5 years, and havent casted a bait caster in at least as long. I went out to the yard with this and was dropping it wherever I wanted within ten minutes. Plus, my yard isnt big enough to cast this as far as I could. All in all it seems like a sweet reel for around 100$. Thanks again!

Look in the box, at the literature it gives a Minnesota adress for servicing. It's worth getting it done on a yearly basis, Enjoy your reel  man :o

In case you're still wondering, the Trion is the BOMB. Casts smooth and long, looks great, feels great when palming....awesome. I like the daiwa's too so ur good to go either way.

Many people have written about Pflueger not just a few. Many people post without being able to form an un-biased opinion. I do not own the 2 exact reels that you mention. I due own a Pflueger and a Shimano spinning. Several friends have borrowed and have commented how smooth they both are which they are. In all fairness my Shimano reel has a fair amount of slop in the handle that the Pflueger has not and costs  $20 more than the Shimano. It is too early to form an unbiased opinion in my case. I would also look at the quality and class / respect level of previous posts by various parties before you heed advice.

Thanks for the review on the Trion. I read all opinions and enjoy the heads up that they afford me.

in my opinion...fishing reels are like cars. They are guys who swear by Chevy...and others who would not be caught dead driving one...and both have their reasons and perhaps both are justified...but the reality is that there are TOOO many variables. How often you fish...what you fish with..how you fish...where you fish...what species you fish for...your maintenance habits...all have an effct on the longevity and performance of your reel ( when comparing reels in the same price range )

It is more a matter of what is a good reel for you. If you are comfortable with it, it works well, and are happy with your purchase then...money well spent...if not, do not buy another one.

...any reel you buy there will be someone who hates that reel and someone who swears by it.

Very well put! Thank you all for the feedback. As I mentioned, I will be keeping this reel, but I think I am going to go for a shorter handled pole. The one I got with the reel has a very long handle below the reel that tends to get in my way a bit. I will get one that is long enough to two hand cast, but doesn't get in my way. Thanks again guys!
