Shimano Curados, 101 and 201?

Featured Replies

Was out fishing with a friend about 2 weeks ago and every reel he owned was a curado.

He said the 101's were better for casting light stuff like crankbaits and jerkbaits etc....

And he said he 201;s are better for swimbaits spinnerbaits and buzzbaits....

What I noticed about the 101's was that they are a lot smaller so it makes sense that it was easier to cast the lighter baitd and it also holds less line he told me.

So my question is how come abu garcia for example dosent have reels like this?

And do you think there is a difference from casting for example cranks with the 101 than the 201?

Thanks -wm

P.S. I think im going to stick with shimano for life. But I might give Abu Garcia a try

Other than spool size and weight, I don't know if there is a difference in castibility between the 100 and 200 size curados. I can tell you this. I have a 201D and it can cast even the tiny inline spinners that I make.  I don't see why a 200 won't cast a lighter lure as your friend claims if the innards of the two are essentially the same. You can tell him that the 201 can get the job done for lighter lures. I would have gone with a 101 but two things stopped me:

1) My reels need to serve double duty as salmon and bass reels so line capacity is a definite necessity. To give you an idea, I did have a Chum salmon spool my 201D last winter.

2) I wanted the HEgearing. If I am not mistaken, the 100/101s do not have the HEgearing. Don't quote me on that though.

I have a 100 and a 200.  I love the 100 and would sell the 200 and replace it.  To be fair my 200 is the high speed version and that may be the problem.  The 100 is light and well balanced and in my hand 80% of the time.

On another note I just purchased a Revo SX and love it.

That is true.

I purchased a 201 Curado last year and did not care for it.  It was a well made reel but it did not palm well and just felt wrong in my hands.  It felt so weird, I returned it.  I have since fished a buddy's 101 and I like it a lot.  I was ready to purchase one of my own when I found a steal on an older 201 SF version.  I have been using this reel for most of my light weight crank bait fishing (1/4 oz to 1/2 oz).  It has been an awesome reel for me.  It casts well, it feels comfortable, and so far it has been a very dependable reel.

They do have reels like that, kind of... The revos have a little wider and a little deeper spool than the 101  so they hold more line.  They are different shape but not too different in overall size. (the revo's are wider but feel lower)  They are built like tanks and have monster drag systems.  Now that the Revo Premier is out, you get all that in a package that's only a couple 1/10th's of an ounce heavier than a 50MG, for $50 more than a curado.  Seriously, is there a reason not to buy it?  ...lol

Give it a try, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

So are you selling all of your 50mg's Keith?

I love my curado 101d- great reel, probably the best I own righ up there with my scorpion 1001mg, the japanesse version of the chronarch 50mg... Great reels very comfortable in the hand/palm- I use them for everything- I do not use swimbaits tho-

Generally, the lighter the spool the lighter the bait you can cast.

Exact same reel as the first 201 you had. The only difference in the SF as apposed to any other Curado is that the SF has a bearing supported pinion gear, and a short spool shaft on the spool. Other wise same reel as a stock curado 201.

hogwire,

Generally, the lighter the spool the lighter the bait you can cast.
Maybe... :-?

Actually the better the spool support bearings used in the reel the easier it is to cast any weight lure.

Also as long as the reel is matched to the right rod rated for the lure intended.

Tight Lines All!!!
