Crankbait Rod Question

Featured Replies

Hey guys I was just curious as far as what type of action one should have on a crankbait rod.  I have one rod for plastics, jigs, and spinners that has a fast action for good hook sets and such (2 spools, one for braid (my jigs) and one for original stren).  I'm looking to get a new crankbait rod and was just curious if I needed anything more than a medium action for it.  I assume not since you are just reeling down to pressure and pulling back on the rod to set the hook (what I normally do, and rarely lose crankbait fish).  I was thinking of using my bass pro img graphite medium action 7'0 rod for the time being til' I get some cash together for a new one.  Should this do the trick?

By cranks, what I use at least I mean Mann's Minus, Rapala Lures such as original floaters, countdowns, shad raps, and bomber lures.  Let me know what you guys think.

For all treble hook lures (crankbaits, jekbaits and topwater) I would recommmend Medium Power/ Moderate Action for medium weight lures. For heavy and deep diving lures, Heavy Power/ Slow Action (glass). Specifically, I fish a St. Croix AC70MM and a Lamiglas SR705R.

Thanks for the pointers Roadwarrior, exactly the info I was looking for.  Later on I will invest in a rod for deep diving cranks, but I don't really use them too much now.  Gives me an excuse for a new rod to buy next year before spring rolls around.  Guess I know what I'm spending that Christmas money on.  I appreciate your help bud.

If you would be interested in a more "general purpose" rod, consider the Avid AC66MF. This rod is rated Fast, but it has a soft tip. I can be used for treble hook lures, but it is also an outstanding stick for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and blades.

I have been using a 7' M BPS Johnny Morris Sig. Series rod for cranks.  It has more of a moderate action and a soft tip.  It can cast a 3/8 oz crank a country mile.  It is not as sensitive as I would like but is a nice rod all the same.

Go with RW's advice, I did when I bought my CB rod.  I went with the Powell 704 CB.  Med. Action.  I love it
