Shimano Curado 101D or Abu Garcia Revo SX-L???

Featured Replies

Hard decision, looking to getting either one of these baitcast reels.

With the Shimano rebate for the Curado, it would cost just as much as the Revo.  But, I would have to pay full pop for the Curado & wait for the check of $50 to come in.

I am brining back the Shimano Citica that I have.  Very nice reel, but it's a friggin' pig!  Also it's not quite as low profile, it sits higher on the the rod seat.  My hands start to feel tired after an hours worth of casting w/ the Citica.

So I want something smaller & that's where my dilemma is w/ the Curado 101D & Revo SX-L.

If you're comparing the two, I see the following differences on the BPS website:

Curado 101D is lighter than the Revo SX (7.4 oz vs. 8.7 oz)

Revo SX has a slightly faster retrive than the Curado 101 (27.5 ipt vs. 25 ipt)

Revo SX has more spool capacity (12# 140yd vs. 12# 85yd)

The Curado uses a 6-pin braking system, and the Revo SX uses a magnetic braking system.

I don't own either reel, but I've handled them in stores.  The Revo is a slightly larger reel than the Curado 101, so you might want to see if you can go to a store where they'll let you put both reels on a similar rod and see which one feels best to you.

You mentioned the Citica being heavy.  That's the only reason I haven't bought one.  I'd give anything if they made a Citica 101.

Good luck, I don't think you'll go wrong with either choice.

Tough decision.  Really it is.  7.4 oz Shimano vs 8.7 oz Revo.  Revo has larger capacity.  The Curado is not ideal candidate for heavier lines and I'm talking 17lb and up.  14 and under I'd not have a problem with the capacity for use as a jig or worm reel.  So depending on what you intend to do with it....it's a tough decision.  To get more capacity from Shimano, as you know, you end up with a "friggin' pig".

My vote....Revo SX.  I love mine and consider it one of the best values in it's price category.  Ain't no way I'd pick a Curado 200 over the Revo SX but the lighter 100 series makes that choice much tougher.

Thanks guys!

Jeff, I too wish that Shimano would come out w/ a 101 sized Citica.  If they "EVER" do, I am getting one.

I already have a nice collection of low profile baitcast reels that feel quite tall, almost not much difference from a round reel.  And I don't mind baitcast reels from 8.5 oz & under.  Going over 9 oz & it gets tiring using that reel!

Line capacity for either reel won't be an issue for me.  I'll be spooling 40 lb (10 lb dia) braid.  So either way I'll have more backing (SX) or less backing (Curado).

The SX has an incredible drag, I think that's the tie braker.

And you can adjust the brakes w/o opening the side plate....

I think it depends on the usage.  I have both a Revo STX and a Curado 101D.  If you're talking about plastics fishing, I think the both would do very nicely.

For moving lures like spinnerbaits, I prefer the STX.  It just seems more powerful for reeling baits with higher resistance.

Yes.  But it is a magnetic brake versus a mechanical/centrifugal brake on the Curado.
