Spinnerbaits & Jigs

Featured Replies

What is the mystery to catching fish on these things!!!  I've only been fishing for about 4 months, but still, I've never caught a single fish on either.  Well, I've caught a few tiny guys on in-line spinners ... but that's it.

I have a 3/8 oz. jig and a few 1/4 oz. jigs in maroon and black, I use culprits cut in half as a trailer most of the time.

For spinnerbait, I use a booyah in a black/brown color, and one that is white/charteheuse.

Help!!!   :'(  >;)

Try different presentations:

-Cast, reel slow

-Cast, reel fast

-Cast, wait 3 sec. reel in

-Cast, wait 6 sec. reel in

-Cast, wait for it to hit bottom reel in

-Cast, stop and reel presentation.

Good luck!

Generally, it's not "what" you fish, but "where" you fish.

Bass relate to structure and/or cover.

I've been throwing them into/near lily pads and structure for the past few days, still nothing.  But I'm going tonight ... in about an hour actually ... maybe I'll have some more luck today.

Spinnerbaits are one of the best baits to use, but they don't always work. For one it is mostly a shallow bait so the fish have to shallow and it is a reaction bait and if the fish are not active they may not take it. But when they're on this bait, it can be a strokefest.

There are a bunch of great spinnerbait articles on this site: http://www.bassresou...ures.html#lures

I like this article a lot: http://www.bassresou...s_fishing.html.

Mass_Bass,what have you been catching fish on?

Yep.

Dig around the site a little, particularly in "Fishing Articles."  Our library is extensive and most have links for additional reference. We might not have "everything" but we're pretty close.

The great fishing articles here are the reason I first starting coming to bass resouce, greatest fishing site on the net by far. Alot of great stuff here, Ive learned alot from the articles and from this forum.

Mass Bass....I just started catching bass on jigs last year. Here is what you need to know. Pick any color of jig you like and as long as it is Black and Blue you will catch fish. ;D A friend tipped me off to using Strike King Bitsy Flip, 1/4oz Black and Blue jigs. My favorite trailer is a Gander Mountain 2.75" Black and Blue craw. Zoom speed chunks will work as well. Cast that jig around boat docks, brush piles or lily pads. Count the lure down. If the water is 5 feet deep, expect the lure to fall 1 foot per second. If the lure gets a tap or stops falling less than 5 seconds, a fish ate it and set the hook. Most times I saw my line moving one way or another and set the hook. Most of my bites are on the initial fall. I ignored the rest of the cast last year and that was bad. This year I read a tip here that said to jiggle the jig when it is on the bottom. Move the jig while jiggling the rod tip. Move the rod just a few inches at a time. If the jig isn't on the bottom and you don't feel the bottom, let the jig fall and jiggle it more on the bottom. I caught my PB this year with the jiggle move it a little technique. If you are pulling it through a brush pile, work it over each little limb. Tap it, jiggle it a few times before you bring it over the limb. I know this is a lot of stuff but it does work. I would throw that jig until you get bit and then you will start to understand what you are doing right.

I'll have to try it out again, my 4 jigs have just been collecting dust for the past 3 weeks.  Thanks for all the good info.
