Trouble Casting Crankbaits

Featured Replies

I thought I would diversify and learn how to use crankbaits, so I ordered a selection of Bandits.  These things hardly weigh anything.  I am using a standard low pro. baitcaster with a 6 1/2 foot med. graphite rod.  I can't get any distance at all, am I missing something here? :-/

You probably do not have your reel adjusted properly.  The medium action rod should cast most crankbaits without any problems.

Also, how much distance are you getting?

I can comfortably get about 40 feet out of a cast, a little more if I want to risk a backlash.  I adjust the thumb screw until the lure just starts to fall with the rod horizontal.

I set my thumb screw to where, when holding the rod horizontally, the spool will stop once the lure reaches the water. You could also try turning the brake down a little.

You didn't say what size cranks or line weight. That also makes a difference.

What kind of shape is your baitcast reel in?  Fairly new or worn some?  When was the last time it was cleaned and oiled?  What kind of line are you using?  Size of line?  All of these are factors in casting distance with light weight lures.

If you line is heavier than 10lb and has a lot of memory( for example Trilene XT), that might be the problem.Make sure you are using a soft line( like Trilene XL).I don't necessarily recomend Trilene, it's just for understanding the difference.

Your rod is fine; I supose the reel is a decent quality in good working order ( if NO, that adds to your dissatisfaction too)

And of course, all the previous advice applies.

Your rod is too short...(heehee)  What works for me is 3/8 oz is the divider. Lighter than 3/8 use spinning gear, more than 3/8 oz., use baitcasting. 7' minimum rod length for both rigs.

One thing I noticed that I think we might forget to factor is the wind and the aerodynamics of the crankbaits we are throwing. I learned that they are definitely not equal.  Some cast better than others and the less aerodynamic they are, the less distance I get even with a properly set reel. For exaple, Rapala DT series cranks cast very well.

For your case, I imagine that lessening your cast control just a wee bit might do the trick. I have pretty much the same type of set up like yours.

MOOK SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM:

1. Place Lure over the side of boat into water

'2. start trolling motor

3. Using properly documented DUKE OF MOOK foot control manual, steer the boat about 20 yards for the bait

4. Remeber to push cast button, and thumb the spool as the line goes out, as not to overrun

5. Now reel in the lure

Continue steps 1 thru 5 until battery starts to get low
