Shimano Crucial vs. Loomis GL2

Recommended Posts

Alright guys, I need a new rod and I have narrowed it down to one of these.  Which do you think is the better rod.  Price-wise they are about the same.  I like the over-the-counter warranty of the Shimano.  Rod will be used as an all-around all purpose rod.  Wormin', spinerbaits, top water, etc.

In regards to warranties they get no better than Loomis.  Just send the rod back with a $20 check for shipping and they send you a brand new one no questions asked.  I have a Shimano Convergence rod and a Loomis IMX and there is no question that the Loomis is a superior fishing rod (although the Convergence is a lower line than the Crucial).  Loomis rods IMHO are the best rods on the planet, they are incredibly sensitive and just feel right in your hands.  That being said Loomis rods tend to be very use-specific, meaning that some are worm rods while others are crankbait rods etc.  To use one as an "all-around" rod might be tough since they have very narrow lure weight specifications, that doesn't mean you would be unable to fish a spinnerbait with a worm rod, but the sensitivity will not be as good.  I recommend getting a 6'6" MH action GL2 if you want it to be an all around rod.

I have a 7' Shimano Sensilite 2-piece rod thats 7' in length. Ive used this rod and use it now exclusivly its a nice rod. I am getting a G.Loomis for my next rod though if that helps.

I have 2 Crucial Rods and am going to buy my third tomorrow.  I have the CRS-D72ML Spinng Rod and the CRCX70M Casting Rod.  I use a Stradic 2500 on the spinning and a Shimano Curado on the casting.

I have brought many a friend out to fish and they have all kinds of gear (no GLoomis though) and when the try the Stradic with the Shimano Drop Shotting Rod, the end up going and getting one.

Things I like about the Crucial Rods:

Warranty

Weight is nice

The cutout for your finger in the cork

The price is right

Available everywhere

Action is great on the Fast and Xtra Fast Tips

The 7'2" is nice for those long shore casts

Things I don't like:

?

I am going to pick up a CRSX72M tomorrow for my Team Daiwa S-Series 4000 reel.  I can't wait.

I fish G Loomis rods exclusively except for one St Croix Legend Elite. I have only one GL2 and it seems dead by comparison to the the GLX or IMX. I have about 15, mostly IMX, GLX and crankbait series.

If I had the same dicision to make as you I would probably buy the Shimano Crucial. I believe it is a better rod than a GL2. The warranty difference is mail back versus over the counter. Buy the way Shimano owns G Loomis. G Loomis makes a great rod in the IMX and GLX but I'm not so sure in the GL2 and GL3.

Make no mistake I love G Loomis rods, but only the high end...............Al

Thanks for the feedback guys!  Al, you hit the nail on the head.  If I could swing an IMX or a GLX, it would be a no-brainer.  I had heard the GL2 was not that sensitive.  I went a head and picked up a Crucial this afternoon.  After playing with both of them, the crucial just felt like a better rod.  Can't beat the warranty on the Shimano either.

I own both of the rods in the discussion.  The Crucial is the top of the line Shimano rod while the GL2 is the bottom of the line G.Loomis rod.  Based on these two rods only, I would pick the Crucial over the GL2.  Not sure if I would pick it over the GL3 and I know I wouldn't pick it over the IMX or GLX.

Bottomline--you made the right choice.

Good choice.

IMO, Loomis should end the GL2 line and make the GL3 the entry point.  The few Gl2's I had were like dead wood compared to all the other rods I have fished.

Given the choices, I don't think the GL2 is worth its price. Crucial hands down over the GL2. The GL2s feel realtively "heavy" for their price.

You will find a Crucial to be an amazing rod for its price. I guarantee it.

I don't have a GL2 but I do have a GL3 and will never buy another.  I have 3 Crucials and they are a WAY better rod than my GL3 is.  I have old Lightning Rods that are as sensitive as my GL3, and an old Pulse that smokes it.  The term "dead", in a descrptive sense, is right on the money for the GL3.  For a $180 rod it's a certain disappointment.  It's just easy to do much better than a GL3.

The IMX may be a better rod, but it's double the money of a Crucial (or nearly so) and Crucial weight and sensitivity are not far off the mark.  The Crucial is a lot of rod for the money.  A GL2 probably doesn't even come close if a GL3 won't.  So many have said that the real GLoomis experience begins with the IMX....believe it.

I just had a pretty good experience with a Crucial on the warrenty issues (If there is such a thing).  I took a 6'6" spinning rod in to try to buy a new tip ( I knocked the ceramic out of it) to put on it.  The guy at the store told me that he would send it off to Shimano and they would do it for free, but I would not have access to the rod for a couple of weeks (It was during a slow time so I didn't care).  They sent it off for a tip and Shimano sent me a brand new rod!  Can't beat that with a stick!

Good choice on the Crucial - Never owned a Loomis but don't really have as much of an urge since I started using Crucials.
