I am thinking about getting a new spinning rod and I am looking for some help with the decision.

I want a rod that will handle weightless softplastics (Flukes Senko's etc.), small spinnerbaits (3/16oz), etc.

Most of the waters I fish have moderate to heavy cover (mostly weedbeds)

I am looking for a rod with enough tip to cast the lighter stuff well and enough butt to turn the fish. At the same time I am trying to avoid ending up with too much rod.

I am considering at the Avid series 6'6" and I don't know if the M or MH is the right way to go.

Same story with the Loomis I am considering the IMX but don't know if the 782 or 783 is the right rod.

There is no retailer close by with these rods in stock and I really don't feel like driving 2 hrs to BPS if I can avoid it.

I am interested in input in regards to rod action and sensitivity, at this point I haven't decided how much I am willing to spend.

You might want to check out the Avid AVS68MXF rod. It has an extra fast tip and rated for baits in the 3/16-5/8 oz. range.

I would advise you to take that two hour trip and check the rods out yourself though.

Ditto on th AVS68MXF. Has a nice soft tip for throwing small baits and goes quickly into a stout backbone for moving fish out of cover.

If you decide to go with the G. Loomis, the 783 will have more of the backbone you are looking for. As a sidenote, I believe the SJR783 is their most popular spinning rod. And one more suggestion: Although your screen name implies a preference for the GL3, the IMX series is where you want to be, if you can.

Purchasing either of these rods doesn't really require a trip to BPS.

You will be happy with whichever you choose.

I love my St Croix Avids, 6'6 Med or 6'8 like these guys said would be good for what you want.

Plus the Avid puts less of a hurtin on your wallet.

I fish this same rod and it works great for plastics....both weight and unweighted. Fished a lot of plastics flukes, trick sticks, and worms with this rig. Actually fished spinnerbaits with success and buzzbaits as well. Jerkbaits.......see where I'm going. The only thing I haven't fished on this rig is crankbaits.

I love my AVS68MXF as well. Great rod for plastics, very light and sensitive.

I use the Avid 6'8" MXF casting rod for Senkos and Ikas. I just got two of the spinning version of this same length and action, but haven't had the opportunity to fish them, so I can't comment on them.

Side by side, the spinning version seems to be a bit lighter in power, and the tip is just a bit softer. I'm thinking it might just be a really good rod for small cranks.

I'm not a proponent of using one rod for everything. Most people aren't. We all have different rods for different applications. But, if I had to use just one rod for everything, that AC68MXF would be the one. It's as close to an all around rod as you're likely to find.

I'm hoping the spinning version is as good.

This is off-topic but I thought his screen name referred to G3 boats or the G3 tour founded by Joe Satriani.   It is a group of 3 excellent guitarists, which varies from year to year,  who have toured together every year since 1996.  The G3 2007 tour was Joe Satriani, John Petrucci of Dream Theater, and Paul Gilbert. I guess I need to get my head out of my . . .

You're probably right! Otherwise it should be GL3?

I guess will wait to hear from G3 Fan to clear this mystery up.

I have both the Avid 6'6" M and the Gloomis IMX 738.  They are both great rods.  The Avid will comfortably handle a bit more weight than the Gloomis.  I like them both and keep them on the deck when I am fishing spinning gear.

I personally wouldn't recommend the 782.  It is way too limber for me.

If I had to choose one over the other, it would be hard but I'd probably choose the Gloomis.  My wife on the other hand wouldn't part with her Avid.  She uses it over her Gloomis.  She has it matched up with a Shimano Stradic 2500.  In fact she rarely gets her Loomis out of the rod locker.

First to clear the air with the Roadwarrior senile1: senile1 is right on both counts (I am impressed) I am a huge guitar fan and I like G3 boats. Ironically I can't play guitar to save my life and I can't afford a G3 yet.

Fin, Feather & Fur up by Ashland should have each of those rod for you to check out. I can't vouch for Loomis rods because I have never fished one but all my rods are St Croix and the Avids are top knotch.
