P-LINE CXX HELP PLEASE??

Featured Replies

just bought my first 2 spools of P-line CXX x-tra stong 12 pound test and started spooling my brand new reel (pfluger supreme) with it.

I noticed as I was spooling it, the line was anything but straight. It started coiling right out of the box.

I kept spooling anyway, hoping the coiling would work itself out.

I went outside and test casted and it only casted like 40 yards and it was completely unsmooth. As the line sat there after my cast, it was all coiled .

Am I doing something wrong? Seems like the line should be nice and smooth and straight and not coiling out of the box but both boxes seem coiled..

I need really long smooth casts, and just spent 100 bucks on a reel  but I can't seem to cast worth a d**n.

The line seems very thick, is there something else I should be using for my rod and reel combo?? (7' st croix avid rod) I'm very confused as P-line has come highly recomended on this board.

Every time I try to go above 10 pound test with any spinning reel it seems it just is to thick and wont cast very well. Heeeeelp!

I use 6# cxx on my spinning reels, and I liked it so much that I bought a large spool of 12# test for my baitcasters. I agree with everything you say.

12# cxx is incredibly strong, but coils up like a telephone cord. I'll stick with the 6# on my spinning reels, but I'll never buy another spool of 12#.

This may all be in my head, but I find it really helps when the line comes of the top of the spool.  The spool should be turning clockwise.  It also Must go on tight.  I have a lot better luck with it when I have it done on the machine at Bass Pro or Academy or have someone help me.  I've only tried to do it once by myself and had problems.  Anytime I have my wife help me or take it to a store no problems.

If you don't want to take off what you have I would tie it to a tree or something, and walk backward until you have more out than you can cast.  Then put pressure on it for a minute or so.  Should help straighten it out a little.

Think diameter if you think the line is too thick, look from a line of the same weight but, smaller in diameter...

I have had this happen to me too though but, I used the line anyway.

Similar to line twist what I would do is run my finger down the line and or I would pinch the line lightly above sometimes under the 1st guide..

That would help some

When I spool my reels once in a while, I would:

* quickly but, as neat as possible spool my spare rod and empty reel.

*pull the line through the eyes of each rod then tie the line onto the reel I want spooled

*I set the rod down against something and loosen the bail accordingly

*Then slowly reel the line onto the reel I am spooling

*Once the spool is full I hold the line stretched tight about 2 feet past the tip guide (eye) and snip the line

*Still pulling the line type I then tie the line (of the newly spooled reel) and tie it to the guide

Hope that helps

I just dont get it!  This shouldn't be this big of a problem, but it is.  I'm wasting money on line I shouldn't be buying because it's all coiled and lame right out of the box.

I'm really confused.  I have spin casting gear.  Am I to understand there's no 12+ pound test that I can buy, that isn't impossible to cast really far on a consistant basis with a pfluger supreme?

If theres a thin diameter line thats really amazing for spinning tackle and far smooth casting someone PLEASE tell me what it is because 10 pound test seems to be as big as I can go with the lines I've tried.

I need better than 10# test to wrestle fish out of the weeds sometimes, and don't wanna go to a bait casting reel.

Oh man!  Yes...12lb CXX has no business on a spinning reel!  I would go with 8lb for an all-around spinning line, or 6lb for small finesse plastics.

CXX has memory up the ying yang and that is its nature. However, I don't think that is your problem.  That thinkness is also the strength of its abrasion resistnce.

As soon as you described your situation, I guessed you put it on a spinning reel. Unless you have a bigger spinning reel a 4000+ sized reel, 12# CXX is not an ideal option for your reel. Therein lies your problem.  Step on down to CXX in 8# strength just to make things manageable.   :'(

Update: I didn't see that The Natural suggested this. Keep the 12# CXX for a baitcaster. It will feel much more at home there. ;)

If you're set on a line that's heavier test, but more manageable and castable for a spinning reel, you might consider Trilene XL. The only downside is that it just isn't very strong.

I bought P-line based off of recommendations from this forum also.

I applaud the guys that use this stuff, I couldn't cast worth a d@mn either.

I stick with my Sufix now, it hasn't let me down yet but it never hurts to try something new.

Trying to put 12lb CXX on a spinning reel is just a big no no.

On a baitcaster, the memory doesn't matter as much, but memory plays a big role in using a spinning reel.

Go with 6lb or 8lb CXX for spinning, and use that 12lb for your baitcasters for heavier baits.

I put Pline on 8 reels after reading rave reviews on this forum.  After one day on the water I removed Pline from 8 reels.  I had a severe issue with knot strength.  I thought the line was breaking on the hook set but I discovered the knot was slipping.  I switched to Cajun red and have liked it alot.  I also started using a palomar knot at the recommendation of just about everyone on this website and it has changed my world.  Thanks guys!!!  I have gone back to the Pline on several reels and no longer have a problem with the knot.  As far as twisting, Pline seems to have a memory like an elephant.  I use 12# on my baitcaster rigs and there is no problem but I would hate to try it on a spinning reel.  The heaviest line I use on any of my spinning rigs is 8# but I prefer 6#.

I fished P-Line for a couple of years. I know lots of guys on here swear by it because it meets certain requirements they find most important. Regardless of one's fondness for the line, no one denies the fact that the line retains a great deal of memory. In cold weather it's 10X worse!

Braid has no memory, but there are other issues. The best compromise I have found, especially for spinning tackle, is Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6 (.010" diameter, 11.9 lb strength).

8-)

Yup my brother had the same problem when he purchased a Symetre and had it spooled up with P Line on the spot. Went out and tried to fish right away, it sucked!

I'm pretty suprised by the trouble people have with CXX.  I use it on my steelhead rods, fishing all winter in temps from 9-40 degrees.  I broke ice out of my rod guides probably 60-70% of the days I fished this winter.  I use it on both spinning and casting rods, 10# test.  It doesn't have any problem handling hot 15-20# steelhead.  I was a little leary of using it on a spinning rod, but all my guests who used it this winter loved it.  I use a casting rod exclusively and didn't have any problem with it.  I can't remember a single birdsnest on either rod, and I fish about 25+ days in really cold weather.

For my bass rods, I use regular CX, 6-8# on spinning reels and 10# on casting reels, again, no problem.

In fact, the only problem I've ever had with CXX is breaking off a snag.  Man, that stuff just doesn't break!  And when it finally does, it sounds like a rifle shot going off!

;)

What usually works well for me is line tamer on a soft cloth while your spooling line.  Spray the cloth down with line tamer and spool line through the cloth.

If I'm using mono, its PLine CXX.  I use 15# on a baitcaster for topwaters and 6,8,10# on spinning tackle for salmon/steelhead.  It is not the softest line, but if spooled properly you should have zero problems with it on spinning tackle.  Try a couple shots of silicone spray to the spool before you hit the water.

If you go above 10# line on a freshwater spinning reel, you are asking for trouble regardless of brand (except braid ;))
