Looking for some spinning wisdom

Featured Replies

I like to throw very light baits- around 1/4 oz

My biggest problem is casting distance- I have no problem controlling most casts but am often challenged by long casts

I typically use 6lb mono and fish mostly in-line spinners (Mepps,) topwater (Tiny Torpedo,) light jigs and small plastics

Anyway if someone has some wisdom on a good set up I would appreciate any input.  I have about $200 for the project and cannot be offended by any brand suggestion

In someway its  not really a brand issue as I would rather know things like rod length and strength suggestions, reel speed, spool size, any line suggestions

thanks

Some general thoughts for your consideration

A 7', or longer rod will aid in achieving greater casting distance.

A medium light, fast action rod will load easier with lighter baits, allowing a longer cast.

Once you've selected the rod, get a spinning reel with the largest spool that will not over balance the rod. The larger spool will allow longer casts.

Cheers,

Shimano Symetre 1500FI or 2500FI, depending how you think it matches up with your rod. If you decide to go with a 6 1/2' ML/F, the 1500 is probably the right reel. For a 7' M/F, the 2500 is the ticket.

8-)

i have a g loomis bsr 803 mossyback w/ a pfleuger supreme 8030 reel it' my best set up . the bsr 802 is even lighter . the 803 is a med heavy rod w/an x fast tip but it will throw from 1/8 - 5/16 and the 802 will throw 1/8-1/4

i think it's exactly what your looking for GOOD LUCK!

The Pflueger Supreme is an AWESOME reel that will cast a "country mile" with the right rod and line. I'd recommend 6# Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft for those long casts.

I am trying a new reel this week for the same problem I purchased the BPS extreme spinning reel and have it on a Bionic blade rod. The Extreme is "supposed" to offer longer casts because of the wide spool design. This is similar to the US reels design. They are on sale right now for 39.99 at BPS.com so I'll let you know the results if you are interested.  shoot me a PM

thanks for the reel suggestions guys

how is this rod?

Shimano Compre Spinning Rod CPS-X77MLB

I was having trouble with the same thing till I tried my grandfathers light action loomis walley rod, now that rod is mine I can just about throw flies with it.  If yo uneed something heavier you might try a moderate action, otherwise my loomis has a ton of back bone but soft tip to get those light jigs and spinners out there

I can get a little lost in the GLoomis letters

do you know the loomis identification of the walleye rod?

thanks

Well, go to their website...

As far as the numbers go, the first two are "length in inches". 84=7'

The third is the Power Rating, but unfortuantely is varies a little bit among the specific classifications. Generally, 1=Light or medium light; 2=Medium light or medium; 3=Medium or medium heavy; 4= Heavy and 5= Extra heavy. However, I have a MBR844C which is Heavy/Fast and a PR844S which is rated Medium Power/ Fast Action, but the Action is actually Moderate! So, it is confusing.
