Anybody own a Pflueger Medalist spinning reel??

Recommended Posts

Aluminum Body. I had one good reel, but still for 60 bucks, graphite body and all the President is a better buy.

I have a President and a Trion both and like them really well.  Just wondered about that Medalist for stepping up to a stronger frame was all.  I'm starting to get a little better at bass fishing and someday I know I'm gonna hook a good fish and I don't want my reel to flex under the load of it.  This passed weekend I hooked a keeper bass 15" long and boated it with the President.  I'm not used to catching fish keeping size, only close but not quite there.  So eventually I guess I'm gonna get to where I can catch them more frequently and want to be prepared when I do.  The President did well, I didn't notice any troubles with it at all, but I know a 15" fish is not gonna pull like a 5 - 8 pounder will.

I got one of my largest friends and we tried to tourque the reel out of alignment ,even went as far as reeling in part of a floating tree, ity didn't budge, so i wouldnt worry too much about it.

I have both the Medalist and the President Pflueger reels. The Medalist is a little more corrosion resistant (stainless steel parts, I forget which parts).

I find the President is just as smooth, if not smoother than the medalist, but I use them in salt water so most of my spinning reels are Medalists.

Finally broke down and bought a Flooger President as all my reels are Shimano.

I love it!

That's all I can add to equation.  :)

Hmmm.....so I might be fine with the Pflueger President only.  Good to know, I'm wanting to add another combo or two to my arsenal when I go out.  I like to have at least 4 or 5 rods rigged up with different baits while out there for a quick cast to the same area with something different sometimes.

Thank you Muddy for the comparison there.  I probably would never attempt to do to mine what you did to yours, but it's nice to know it held up well under the load.  ;D

i would buy the new redisigned medalist coming out which is all aluminum body and rotor.i hate graphite reels as i have snapped the necks on a few.i have a medalist and it is a fantastic reel.from tackle tour "Pflueger Medalist Spinning Reel: The Medalist isn't a new model but this year the spinning reel gets an upgrade. Because many anglers would use the reel for both freshwater and saltwater applications, Pflueger knew they would have to make this reel more rugged and they did so by introducing a redesigned Medalist with an all aluminum construction. You will see very little plastics used on this reel as it is built to be tough."

Rooster,

I own both a President and a Medalist. I haven't examined the Medalist close enough to answer your original question. Both are very smooth reels though.

I haven't seen enough difference that a Medalist is worth $20 ore than the President.

Go for what you like. Like several have said seldom do you here someone say " I should have gotten the cheaper reel "

Funny that you should say that about the cheaper reel cause right after I got the President and the Trion (bought both the same day) I fished them and couldn't see enough difference between them to have paid more for the President and I ended up saying I should have just gotten two Trions. ;D  Truth be told, I only bought the President over the Trion in the same size cause it was blue and I had a blue rod for it to go on.   :)  I'm like that, it has to look as good as it fishes.

But I do like the President a lot anyway. Only differences I ever found were that it had 3 more bearings than the Trion and also has an aluminum sideplate on a graphite body while the Trion is all graphite.

I did notice that they made the President with two different rotor types. It's made different in how the bail is attached to it that is. I got one that is identical to the Trion but Bass Pro and Cabela's shows it with something entirely different. The tackle shop where I got mine at had both and I made sure I got the one I liked best. Wonder why they did that??

Anyway, after seeing the pictures of the newer Medalist, I may wait and see what's gonna be offered in that in the way of a combo. That reel is SHARP!!! And all aluminum too. So if I do decide I want an aluminum reel to handle a heavy fish then I'll wait on one of those.

In the meantime I'm gonna fish the h3ll out of my President and Trion and hope I burn one up on a 10 pounder!! If it's on the Trion then it's gonna be epic cause it's the smaller of the two!!

I have a Medalist. I never thought it was worth the extra money, I should have just gone with a President. The Medalist doesn't feel as smooth to me, and it feels bulky and clunky.

They changed them 2 years ago, some stores just have older pics of the product

So which one is the current make of it, made like the Trion or the other way??  I didn't like it made like what's shown in this year's Bass Pro catalog.  Seemed to me that it just looked weaker and that it might not hold up.  Might just be in my head, but I just like it better the way I bought mine being.
