Featured Replies

Hey Fellas; How important , if at all are metal gears in a baitcaster. I know that all but one of my baitcasters has sythetnic plastic gears of some type. Is one better over the other and why?

Thanks,Dominick

If you like the reels, don't worry too much about it. Probably only a question of longevity... but you have switched out your reels in the past 2 years so unless you plan to use these "long term" I doubt you'll have a problem. And if you happen to wear one out, send it in for repair, or replace it. Chance are good that you'll upgrade or replace it before you wear it out.

I don't worry about plastic/graphite/nylon parts very much (flexing, torqueing, breaking) since you rarely apply more than 5 lbs (if that) of pressure before you lose drag. I'm sure there are some exceptions though.

All BC reels have a white, gray, or black NYLON idler gear/s in them. They are located in the crank stack area that is a "fail safe". Meaning if the worm gear or the level wind gets hung up and you keep cranking the main and pinion drive gears are protected as the NYLON gears will fail (blow out the teeth) first and are cheaper to replace....

Just my .02¢ from the bench....

All BCs have at least one nylon gear.
