I've only been fishing now for about 12 years. In most of that time I thought they broke rod lengths every 6 inches, like 5'6", 6', 6'6", and 7'. Then in the last couple of years I've really noticed there's a lot of 6'4", 6'9", 7'2", and other odd lengths out there. Can a 7'2" rod really make THAT much difference over a 7' rod??

2 inches wont help much, what is really needed is strength so the rod won't fail in the middle of the fight if you get my drift

While 2 inches from the pivot point could make a meaningful difference in the speed of the tip during a cast, other factors come into play.  For instance, from the reel, my 6'6" and 6'3" rods are almost the same length (< 1" difference) and have nearly the same guide spacing.  Most of the difference is in the length of the grip.  Thus, depending upon design, the 2" difference could be more a matter of ergonomics than tip speed.
