Crankbait Reel

Featured Replies

I need suggestions on a new crankbait reel. I currently use the Abu Garcia 4600 C3 (5:3.1) for a crankbait reel and it cranks pretty good however I can't get it to cast far enough without a backlash.

What reel under $100 can you guys recommend for shallow to medium cranking? (Bandit 300, 1oz. Rattletraps, Deep Little N, Mann's 15+)

I'm not a real expert on this, but I do well with mine. What kind of rod do you have under the reel and what kind of line are you using?

That is a great reel you may want to spend some more time practicing with it. 2 reels, that are somewhat easier FOR ME to cast, may not be for you

Fritts BPS Crank reel

BPS Extreme 5.2:1

These reels are 79 bucks , but go on sale 3 or 4 times a year( They are due) for 59, If you decide to go this way I would wait for the sale price.

Right now I'm using a Abu Garcia Tournament Grade 7ft Medium rod with 14lb Trilene XL. I can cast it smooth about 30 yards but my partner cast his reel about 50 yards smoothly. He uses an older reel I can't find but I need something I can cast 50 yards smoothly.

Where were fishing is 800ft below the dam, we can't go any close or else we'll get DQ'd so we have to cast as close as we can and I need something that will cast farther than 30 yards with a 1oz. crankbait.

I love my quantum accurists and you can pick them up for cheap, but im not a crankbait guy but i do know they handle heavier baits well.

One suggestion would be to knock it down to 12lb test. And see about using yuzuri ultra soft, gamma copolymar, or suffix seige. 14# seems alittle heavy for that reel.

I agree with firefightn15, go down to 12# or even 10# line.  I use a 4600 every once awhile and I can get pretty good casting distances.

Also, your reel may need cleaning/lubricating.

BPS OR CABELAS HAS SOME GREAT REELS UNDER $100 AND A GOOD 7FT MH ROD WORK GREAT

You can also look to a longer rod.  Alot of guys in the carolinas crank with 7 1/2 to 8' rods to get the extra distance on the cast to get their bait down deeper for longer.

alabamabassmaster,

I need something that will cast farther than 30 yards with a 1oz. crankbait.
It's NOT the reel, thats a great casting reel.....

I would be looking at the average weight of the CB i'm throwing and adjust to that...

Most 7' MF Graphite rods I know of are rated up to 3/4 oz. You might be using a rod that is not loading the way it should. What kind of rod is your partner using?

My personal CB rods "ProE Glass" that I used were rated 3/8 - 1 oz. and a 7' Medium Heavy Moderate tip, the other is a 6'6" Medium Heavy Moderate tip rated at 3/8 - 1 oz.

Don't do much crankin anymore..

Just my .02¢ from the bench..

Tight Lines!!!!
