Line Snapping

Recommended Posts

What's the most common cause of line snapping? I lost 2 of my favorite lures the other day after a "craccck" tree snapping like sound when casting.

Was on some Stren Original 8lb.

Hmm...

Set your drag with a scale to 25-30% of breaking strength, within the parameters of the rod. Gemnerally, I would suggest around three pounds.

I fish Yo-Zuri Hybrid and Hybrid Ultra Soft. I have never been broken off by a fish:

Spinning tackle: #6 Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft (.010" diameter, 11.9 lb test)

Baitcasting gear:  Ultra Soft #12 (.013" diameter, 19.5 lb test)

8-)

"When casting" is a result of weak spots in the line, probably from backlashes.

We have another thread running on this issue: Weak spots appear as kinks which

should be cut off and thrown away.

That tree cracking sound you described sounds familiar to me. I had a line snap with a whip cracking sound like that once. My line was overlapping on my spool in one spot and when I cast the line snapped from the weight of my lure. An object in motion scientific mumbo jumbo stuff.

Same thing happened to me last Sunday and again yesterday. Breakage was at the reel. Reel and rod guides are fine. I was using Trilene XL 8lb.

I'm now looking at the other post.

No additional help there.

Mine broke off at the middle of the pole after casting. I know because the line was dangling from one of the middle loops. Lost two freaking lures! DARN! Time to get some new line!

You sure its not your rod causing the problem? I have had a problem on a rod where in one of the rod guides/eyes, a chip of plastic broke off. This caused that eye to damage the line and I would snap off constantly until I figured out that was the problem.

Not saying this is definetly your problem, just giving you something to look for that could be causing it.
