Rod tip replacement...expected changes?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone can tell me what the expected performance / feel changes i could expect by replacing 3-inches of a broken rod with a new tip? The rod is a 6-foot, medium action, formerly fast tip.

I cant say what It will do but you should take advantage of this by using a super high quality one that might help youre casting distance. Jannsnetcraft has a good selection.

I have done that a few times in the past.  The rod will most likely be completely changed, maybe for the better or for the worse.  You'll just have to wait and see.   Mine were all for the worse.

2 things happen when you shorten a blank from the tip...  the action slows and the power increases.  How much change depends on the original taper and number of inches lost.

Mine were all for the worse.

almost every time people say worse.  The reason is that we had a rod we liked, now it's a different power and action...  still might be fine but it's not what we wanted out of that particular rod so it's hard to like it.

Had one of MY Cabelas XML rods retipped and not really much of a difference but do make sure u get a quality tip or have it done by a shop or person that really knows what they are doing.

The guy that retipped my rod had never really done it before so the tip wasn't as tight as it should have been and move around.

I had a 6'  Med spinning rod  which is now 3" shorter and I cannot tell the difference.  I also have what was a 6'6" MH bait caster, which is now 3" shorter and it is my tube rod full time.  Works great and has landed many, many bass.   I must point out that my rod repair guy respaced the line guides on the bait caster.  It  sure was cheaper than a new rod.

First off more than 2 things happen when you shorten a blank from the tip (especially 3")...

Taper/Action: More Moderate, Stiffer

Stiffness/Power: Increases

Line Ratings:

lower end: Increases

upper end: slight Increase

Lure Rating:

lower end: Increases

upper end: slight Increase

Tip-Top Tub Size: Increase

8-)
