I've been looking high and low for a 7.5 - 8 ft cranking rod that can handle up to 2oz baits and that had a grip behind the trigger that is 12-15 inches long.   I can't find one anywhere.  The closest I can get is a "lite" musky rod, which I haven't completely ruled out.  

So I'm thinking about a custom.  

So, some questions...

1)  Can I get a good custom in the $250-$300 range.  If not, what should I expect to pay for a rod like the one described above?

2)  What sort of warranty could I expect?

3)  Who are some reputable builders?  

4)  Any other thought or things to lookout for would be appreciated.

The cost will greatly depend on the blank and amount of decorative work but you should be fine with that budget, as long as you don't want anything too exotic.

Each builder has a different policy. (but don't expect a free lifetime replacement type...)

3) Who are some reputable builders?

I think there are many... each with their own style and strengths. As mentioned Reel Mech is very good.

4) Any other thought or things to lookout for would be appreciated.

Be very specific about every detail. Build it "on paper" before releasing someone to start.

Have you considered building one yourself? You seem to be handy enough to do it. No big investment required to get started. Worth thinking about.

I used a 12 inch handle, burl cork, skeleton real seat, micros, etc...

 The finished product cost me about 70 bucks in materials, who knows how much in labor.  I really love the final build, its one of the lightest and most sensitive crankin rods I've every used.  I bet you could build the rod yourself, if you had the least bit of interest. I've found that building a nice looking, great performing rod isn't hard at all.  The elite builders are the guys who can take the same great performing rod, and turn into some serious eye candy.
