cheap and expensive baitcaster reels

Recommended Posts

could the reason I am not doing too good with my baitcaster be is because it is a cheap reel instead of paying a around 50 bucks for one (or does it not matter at all)? I put a heavy weight on it and I can throw it without nesting but it only goes a few feet, any tips?

If you paid less then $ 50 it is a cheap reel. If with a heavy weight you cast only a few feet then it needs to be adjusted. I beleive you have the spool tension way too tight.

X2, its most likely the spool tension. You should be able to find some tips on setting up a baitcaster on this forum (I think there might be a sticky? if not check the articles or do a search). Even a cheap reel should be able to much farther than a few feet if its set up properly.

X3 cheapest of cheap should still cast a heavy weight pretty far.

My first baitcaster was so cheap it didnt even have a spool tension knob!  It was 15$ and it included the rod also.

When it comes to fishing equipment you really do get what you pay for. However, even a cheap reel will suffice.  I fished alot of the Shimano Callisto's and Crestfires which are $40 reels and I had a Shakespear or two that was $30 before I got smart and upgraded to Citica's and Curados.  If you don't fish alot than it is better to fish cheaper reels but if your gonna fish tournaments or be out on the water every day your better off fishing some higher end reels.  The $40-$50 reels are awesome until the graphite frames break which usually break in a season of hard fishing or two, then it usually is better to go buy a new one in most cases.

As far as your current reel, I agree adjust the spool tension knob until the spool just barely moves when on free spool when you have a lure tied on.

X? on spool tension.

Once you get your mad skills try to see how loosely you can keep your reel set and still cast it consistently. Thats how Ive been doing it for a while and it works for me. Youve gotta keep your thumb-brain going though.

Don't buy a baitcaster less then 100 duckies.

Bull***t! Abu Garcia C3 - $79, maybe less. Excellent reel. I got my only bc (Daiwa Procaster 100h, older model) for $30. No, not as smooth, palmable or as light as a new curado. But for $30, metal frame, smooth, and reasonably well built. Take some time to explore your options.

WELL EXCUSE ME!!! LOL

I didn't say lower priced ones won't work, I just believe the higher end ones are smoother and easier to learn on. I should have added IMO to my post becaue it's Just my opinion.

I'm not ripping on you, man, just saying alternatives exist. Someone looking for a quality bc have more options than they sometimes realize.

Now, go fish!

Whoa! Let's chill a bit...

Lower priced baitcasters can get the job done, no doubt,

but generally somewhat higher priced reels tend

to be more "user friendly".

Maybe the C3 is fine, I'm not familiar with the reel. I do

know that the Citica D (last years model) is a fine reel

that you might find for around $75.

8-)

BassmanfromNC, I knew that. Wasn't rippin' ya, promise. I agree, if buying a lp bc, a $100+ is probably the way to go. Other alternatives, including used, exist. We cool.

RW, we all good - get back to your shimano catalogs and investment stuff!

:)

There are a few under $100 that are worth owning....but they are really few and far between

Check the flea market section of this site.  I have bought a couple bc and been well pleased with them.
