Pflueger Supreme spinning reel or President

Featured Replies

I'm looking into getting this reel to use for dropshot/finesse uses. Does anyone have this reel and use it for this purpose? What do you think? What size would be best for this? Or do you just have the reel in general? What do you think? Are there better reels in the same price range?

I have two of them(30 and 35) and love them both. Have never in 2 years had a problem with them. As for dropshotting the 30 series is perfect. The 35 starts to be almost too big but I have big hands so it works out.

I own 2 of them as well and the 35 is too big for bass so I moved it to saltwater use,the reels work fine and no problems.  I think the president is a better reel, but a little heavier and I updated my knowledge yesterday(was at bps), the president now has a composite grip insted of the rosewood handle which is a turn off for me.

the president cannot compare to the supreme.i would use a 4000 size.with flouro line the bigger spool makes less twist.

This makes me kinda sad    :'(

Maybe I looked at the 50 which always had a composite handle, I wasn't really paying much attention, I'm not in the reel market.

I have a 50 medalist which is a saltwater version of the president and yes it is better than the supreme, smoother and stronger frame, I feel it's smoother than my stradfic fi.  Now that I've had the supreme 30 for 8 months, it's fine for bass but it isn't "all that".

I love my Supreme. I have the 8030 size which weighs in at 7.4 oz.

If weight is not an issue, you have a choice of the President XT (9 oz, composite handle for the 30 size) or the original President 30 size with a rosewood handle at 9.1 oz.

I don't own a President so I can't give any feedback, but they are extremely popular.

Also, with the weight differences between the XT's and the originals averaging 2 tenths of an ounce, are the XT's worth the extra $20 ?

I don't think the Supreme with it's magnesium frame would be an ideal saltwater choice, unless you did a complete cleaning and lube after each outing.

I also own the Trion, which is a notch below the President (7 bearings vs 10 bearings). The Trion is a fabulous reel, especially for $40. My only beef is the rosewood handle, which is nice looking, but I find it slippery at times as I fish in the rain a lot.

I don't think you can go wrong with any Pflueger. The Supreme is the most $$ because of it's magnesium frame. If you can get to a store and handle them, that should make it easier to decide.

All of them do well where it counts on a spinning reel, which is drag and line handling. Go on Cabela's or BPS and read the reviews.

I have several Supreme's. 30's and 35's and love 'em. The reels being so light (especially the 30) is what initially made me buy one to try. After using it I found it to be very smooth with minimal line twisting and the drag is slick as silk.

Most people will say that but the truth of the matter is no problem. I use mine nearly daily for the last 8 months or so. As with any reel used in saltwater it should be rinsed with fresh water, also an occasional spray of salt x doesn't hurt.  I haven't evened oiled yet and it's as smooth as the day I bought it.  Oh yeah with every reel I buy, right out of the box I use corrosion block, makes em smoother than the factory.
