didnt wanna rip off the other spro thread, but i had been wodering this after seeing an ad in a mag. and i was wondering...are the spro frogs reallllly worth the 8 bucks they cost???

i have a snagproof perfect tournament frog or whatever...the one w/ tassle legs...and most of the time the fish miss the bait totally, but when a fish does get on, the hooks refuse to set in the fish's mouth. ive heard other ppl have this problem w/ this frog too.

well is the bronze eye the same way? can you get a nice, solid, un-obstructed hookset on it?

thanks guys.

i tried the bronze eye for about six months last year and didn't like the hookup ratios or the walk of the bait.

i only fish the snagproof bobby's perfect frog now. no need to modify this bait other than the legs, which i trim pretty short for a better walk.

I own one, Tones of strikes, not many hook ups though, I am not an expert at setting the hook but I find I do a lot better with t-rigged plastic frogs.

I like the bronze eye for lilly pads though, you can bang them off them pretty hard without worrying about getting it tangled or stuck in the mess.

Im going to post the same thing I said in the last spro topic.

Don't like the bronze eyes, the paint job got torn up on mine, Ive had some that were too soft and sunk after 30secs in the water, would have to reel em in and squeeze water out, had some that were too stiff and hook set wasn't good. They did seem to get alot of hits though, but I don't like em. Best frog Ive found so far for me is the original scum frog in black/green (take a look at the color cause black/green doesnt describe it well), this frog gets me alot of strikes, it always floats well, and its nice and soft for a good hook set, it also comes out of the muck clean and after hookin a fish its still in quality form just arrange the hooks again, and your good to go. http://www.scumfrog.com/scumfrog.html

I was talked into buying this frog by one of the guys at bass pro shops and he told me then to take a pair of pliers and bend the hooks slightly more away from the body of the frog for better hooksets.   Try it - it works.

Better have a heavy action rod and a reel spooled w/ at least 40lb braid.

I like these and they catch fish but I would much rather be throwing my horny toads on a 5/0 owner EWG.

Bronzeyes are the best and toughest frog (rat) bait that I have ever used. I prefer the Jr. size. Here is a tip, slip a tube rattle into the hollow body and hold on. Somedays bass do just slap at rats, other days they absolutely inhale them. Usually you can adjust something if you are getting short hits, such as type of retrieve, speed of retrieve (very important), or color of bait (this usually works). Another trick is to trim the rubber strands down a bit and leave one side about a 1/2 inch longer than the other. Makes it easier to "walk the dog". These are just like all baits, they are not mastered in a day. You will find more and more ways to hone this technique with experience. Just like throwing a crankbait. Somedays it is just chuck and wind, but there is much more to crankbaiting than that.  I almost forgot, it is very important to throw on heavy braid, ie 60-80lb test.  Both for the very low stretch quality and so you can winch in a 2 pound bass and 10 pounds of weeds.  LOL.  Not much fight in a fish when they are enveloped in weeds though.

the spro bronze eye frog is the olny frog ill throw .... yea the paint will get chewed off ,, thats because they get bit .... if your frog begins to take on water ,,, check the nose of the frog it has to be sealed to keep water out ... if the nose isnt sealed use a slyicone gel to reseal the nose to the line tie .... guys need to understand how nasty those frog bites can be .... i had a bass smak my spro he ripped the nose all the way down and coverd the hooks with the rubber from the nose .... then he didnt let go til i had right up on shore ,,, so i could get a good look at this pig ...... you win some you loose some .....

i had trouble with the hook sets also .... the best thing to do is wait till you know they will be on a frog .... when you know there on the frog bite hit the water .... Just bring the frog couple days of this your hook up ratio will go through the roof .... ive had more than a few days i hooked ever bass that bit that spro ..... :D

I love the frog, and is def. worth 8 bucks, but I hardly ever get a hookup!

bronze eye frog=overrated gimmick ::D

I love the spro frog. You just need to get a feel of how long to wait to set the hook then your hook up ratio should increase.

I think they are crap.

Why are they on sale at every store now?

Let me tell you something about the Spro 65.  It is a HOG catcher down here in S. FLA and I am not talking about just fishing the thick stuff. I have caught well over 100 or more bass with the Spro frog and yes I have some bad ones that sink, some that ripped, but all-in-all if you stick to it, get use to delaying before the hookset, and use the correct tackle and presentation you are going to catch some BASS.  I always trim the skirt a bit on my frogs one side a bit longer, I also paint the hook eyelet black.

Its not a gimmick lure and it beats the pants of the some other brand frogs I've used (Snag Proof Moss Master and Bobbys Perfect).

If you guys want to try another good frog try the Swamp Donkey.  It floats a little higher and flat.  I ordered some  of River2Sea's  Bully Wa lures the other day and I will see if they can compete against Spros/Donkey.  Swim frogs are a different story, sometimes the bass like them better sometimes they don't.

Oh, by the way just because something goes on sale doesn't mean it sucks :D. If that were the case then Shimano Curados must really be horrible since Shimano is giving $50 back on purchases

Bassaddict,

You're right, a sale doesn't always mean a bad product.  The truth will come out as to why Shimano is doing the rebate (got me to buy a curado), and as to why every major retailer is have a sale on the bronze eyes I don't know.

Hollow bodied frogs seem to be a crap shoot.  I got very short life out of the two bronze eyes I bought in the middle of summer.  Also one was definitely softer than the other.

I'll be sure to give the swamp donkey a shot next season.

Cory

Dean Rojas sure does love em.  Me on the other hand don't know.  All about knowing when to use them and when not.
