swimbait line

Recommended Posts

I am using 30lb braid on my SB setup. Is straight braid ok or should I tie a leader of mono on it? Your thoughts? Thanks

I think the general consensus by the cali guys and big baiters is that you don't use braid ever for swimbaits.  I use 20lb CXX

I don't throw real heavy swimbaits, 2 oz max. mostly Mattlures hard bluegills...My rig is a shimano 7'6" calcutta, reel is shimano Chronarch 101...I use either 12, or 10 lb Yozuri Hybrid ultrasoft. If your tossin heavier baits, I'd bump the test up accordingly, also depends on structure too.

You're throwing a Hard Gill on 10 or 12 lb. line?   :-?

If I was going to use braid for swimbaits, I would not use anything less than 50 lb.

I tried braid, didn't like it.  Nothing but 20 and 25 lb. PLine CXX clear now.

Yup... ;)

Why in the world would you do that?

I would think just casting 2oz too hard could snap 10lb line. Seriously, I don't even throw moderately heavy jigs with 10-12lb line

20lb CXX green and 25lb Triple Fish Camo-Escent.

Throwing a Hard Gill on 10 or 12lb?  Just send me your money.  It will generally have the same effect.

Why all the doubting..re: my line..?  No offence, but sometimes you can go to far with line, i.e. needing 20lb when a lighter line will do.

i just prefer to keep my baits, that's all...i'm surprised that you've never had any issues

If I do have issues, you'll be the first to know... ;)

I think I will try the 30lb braid straight and see how it goes. If it doesn't work well, I have some 25lb trilene big game or I will try the Pline cxx that most are recommending. Thanks.

If you start pulling baits out of fish' mouths or ripping up their lips, try the stretchier mono or copoly options.

To answer the original post.... I would HIGHLY suggest tying on a leader of some sort.  The main reason is, if you get a backlash while throwing a semi heavy bait, your sure to snap braid, especially 30#.  Adding a 5-10ft leader of some sort gives the line just enough stretch to eliminate this possibility.  Once again, i'm not sure the size/weight of bait you are throwing, but I've casted off wake jr's while throwing them on 50# braid, it doesn't take alot to snap them off.

It's also the abraision resistance factor.  So if your running a 5-10ft leader, you have more abraision resistance when running around rocks, trees, etc than braid.

If you are set on using braid, I HIGHLY suggest using 50 # minimum.  Personally I wouldn't use anything less than 65 for baits 2+ oz's.  Even then I would be sure to have a leader

Hammer - When I first started throwing swimbaits (1-2oz) I too used 12# CX.  Back then I didn't know any better.  Looking back on it I was lucky not to loose any big fish or baits.  I think 10-12# will work in "normal" situations, but when swimbait fishing you always want to be prepared for the un-expected.  That's why we don't use the minimun # line.  I can think of a handful of times last year where I would of easily lost fish (as well as $40+ baits) if I were using lighter line because the fish took me around a tree or stump.  But to each his own

I personally use P-Line CXX on all my swimbait rods.  I've gone through a handful of brands and finally decided this is my stuff.

30# CXX for 6+oz baits

25# CXX for 3-5oz baits

20# CXX for 1-3oz baits

Add a little KVD line and lure conditioner and your set.  Good luck!!!

Thanks Braunuss..Normally where I fish there's not alot of timber ect, there are however rocks. If I do lose a bait, I'll certainly take your recomendation re: CXX.

Just for the record so to speak, if I were to be fishing around timer ect, then I would definitly go up in line size, oth, I've never used p line, might just try some..thanks again.
