Hey guys I was wondering what would be the best frog rod for around $100. I am also looking for a reel around $100 also. Whats the best gear ratio? I like fishing lilly pads and the thick stuff and probably going to be using 50-60 lb braid. Thanks in advance.

bps extreme 7' heavy/fast rod, with an abu garcia revo S or a shimano citica.

something in the 6.x:1 speed should serve you well for this purpose.

    I like a 7' rod.  A Falcon Original 7' MH works pretty good.  Remember, you don't need sensitivity so when deciding what rod to get choose the strongest rod.

    For a reel I would go with a Quantum Code baitcaster with a 7.1:1 gear ratio.  I might look like a small and weak reel, but man does it pack a punch!

    Both the rod and reel I mentioned are under $100.00 so you will have some extra coin to get you some frogs.

Team All Star Big Boy 7' 2" MH/F if you will be fishing thick cover and braid. As for the reel you can't beat the Revo S for the $ IMO! Although a 7:1:1 ratio would be ideal the S model will be more than enough speed for frogs.

Yeah I currently have a Revo S and I LOVE it! Thanks for your opinion...I was hoping that you would answer because you fish florida lilly pads and i know you have caught some monsters. Thanks again!

for the record, fish it with whats comfortable for you... this past weekend, I fished a popping bronze eye on a 6'6" MH/F spinning outfit (stradic 2500) with 20# braid, I liked it better than throwing it on a bait caster, and did just fine in heavy pads, reeds, and other cover.

I'm a mostly baitcaster guy, but something felt right about throwing it on that set up. and I really don't think you *need* 50+ lb braid, it may be a bit of over kill

I don't know what the best frog rod is, but I have found a reel that is hard to beat for frog fishing. I use a Daiwa Viento for frog fishing and that twitching bar (which I found useless for everything else) really makes that hollow body frog dance when you rapidly press the twitching bar. I was amazed how well it worked for the frog and the Viento is a good reel all around.  You might be able to find a good deal for one on eBay (though, it might be a little more than $100).

Another low cost rod that I am currently using for frogging is a Fenwick Venture 7'MH (fishes like a heavy) paired with a Revo S-L. I am throwing 50lb sufix braid.

Balances nicely together and I think the grand total $$$ of rod, reel and full spool of line was under $150.  You can buy quite a few frogs for $50.

BPS was having a sale on Rick Clunn rods for $70 (from 99.99).  I picked up a topwater specific and it is really nice for frogs.  Mine is 6'6", MH, 10-20lb, 3/8-1 1/2 oz lures.  it also has SiC (Silicon Carbide) guides.

I have the St Croix Mojo 7' Heavy/Fast................I love St Croix, but I do not care for this rod, it is a broomstick with guides on it, and way too heavy. It's got plenty of power, you could pull a hippo out of a swamp with it, but I don't like it. I went back to my old frog rod, which I should have never went away from in the first place. That rod is a Fenwick HMX 7' H,  it's a lighter than the Mojo, which makes walking a frog for several hours alot more enjoyable, has more "tip" which allows it to fling lighter frogs alot further, and plenty of power. It's not as powerfull as the Mojo, but I have had no trouble with hauling "decent size" NY bass (3-5lbers) out of some thick slop.

I use 50lb braid, Power Pro is my choice, and a Cabela's Prodigy casting reel on this set up. I really like this reel alot, it's the same as my Team Daiwa Tierra, and I notice ZERO differances in performance between the 2, plus it's a few bucks cheaper.
