I'm looking into investing in a g-loomis jig and worm rod. I'm thinking that I should go with a 7 foot rod. I'm not exactly sure if i should get a fast action or an extra fast action. What advantage will fast or extra fast offer?

If this is for plastics i would go with the extra fast over the fast.  mainly for hooksets

I will second the XF. The 2 and 3 power jig and worm rods are XF. If you want a 7 ft rod I would suggest the 853 as a good start. It would cover most bottom contact applications.

The extra fast is great for single hook baits as it loads up quicker and helps drive the hook home.

X-tra fast.

if you're fishing closer in and especially if you're pitchin', get the XF. an XF will give you better pitchin' accuracy.

if you're overhead casting, a fast action rod will load more and give you more distance and is easier to cast consistently too. fast is slightly more versatile than XF (meaning you can fish a wider variety of lures on it) and plays fish better (harder for them to throw the hook).

have fished both for years and, personally, prefer the bcr glx (xf) over the mbr glx (f) for overall plastics...the faster response of the xf just seems to translate into quicker, more solid hooksets for me.

that said, i use fluoro as a main line...if you're using braid, i would not hesitate to look at the mbr glx...the bcr glx uses recoil guides (except for the tip)...while this doesn't bother some, the combination of recoils and braid can sound like an ex-mother-in-law's voice.

the bcr 853 is an excellent choice for all around jigs and worms but, don't sell the bcr 803 short...it is a pitching machine... for jigs alone, i would bump it up the the 854 (804).

if you prefer braid, i would look at the mbr844 glx.

I have the BCR803 in XF, it's not Loomis higher end IMX or GLX, it's the MossyBack rod, but never the less I do like the rod alot for what I do with it, plastics, lighter jigs, and also topwater. I really like the XF tips.  For me the XF requires a quick snapping hookset and its on.

Go for the BCR 803 GLX, even on the GLoomis website they say it's the best 3/8 jig and worm rod.

Another vote for the XF. Altho Ive only used one G-Loomis rod, I can tell you that they are worth every penny.

rod and I would suggest the better choice. In my line up the

BCR is my dedicated jig rod, the MBR for weighted soft plastics.

However, the BCR is new for me. For ten years I have been

fishing the MBR844C for a variety of applications.

IMX vs. GLX

The IMX is what separates G. Loomis from the competition. If

another $100 or so doesn't mean that much to you, GLX is the

ticket. The difference is subtle.

I agree with Road Warrior. The IMX MBR844C is an excellant choice. Its a little more versitle and works extremely well. If you want a 6'6 go with the IMX MBR783.

By the way, the difference between the IMX and the GLX is not worth the extra $100.00 in my opinion.

We each feel in our own different ways, but there is enough difference between the IMX and GLX to warrant the differnece in price in my hands.  Rod selection should be based more on the primary weights of the baits you'll be using most often, action is secondary.  If you're looking for a 10" worm/football jig rod, that will be different than a 1/4 oz. T-rig, 3/8 oz. jig rod.  The 4 and 5 power BCR GLX Loomis rods are FAST action, NOT extra fast.  The 2 and 3 power BCR GLX rods are extra fast... Let us know the weights of the baits you plan to use, and how heavy the cover is you fish, then a more accurate reccomendation can be made!

Com'on RW, I agree the $100 diff is substantial but the difference in feel between the IMX and GLX is a little more than "subtle".  :-/
