which baitcaster?

Featured Replies

I currently have a shakespeare intrepid spinning reel, which I got around 5 years ago and was probably very cheap. I was looking to upgrade and want to go with a baitcaster. Which would be a good one to go with? I mainly fish lakes rivers and ponds for bass and trout, but I don't want to be limited to that. Dicks has a Citica 200e by Shimano and a Accurist SW baitcaster by Quantum and they both look good for $120 and 100$ respectively. Are these any good or should I order something else offline?

Thanks for all of the help

The Citica is the best available reel for less than $150.

IMO, the Abu Garcia Revo S cannot be beat for the $! It can be had new for under $100 online!

I must agree this is my first bait caster and its absolutely wonderful. It's easy to learn on and casts very far. Additionally if you read up on everyone who has owned a citica they last forever.

I would highly recommend it if you can afford it as a fantastic starting reel.

the citca is worth the money for sure... but what you need most is for you to decide

I would go with the revo s. They are great, and you can get them new off of ebay from tackle wholesalers for under 100. There was a couple in the lea market forum on here.

my thought process is...a new reel wouldn't cause me to start catching fish...but i feel perhaps waders would help since i could access more water. hmm

i havent caught any bass over the last several days fishing different spots using spinners, worms, topwater bait and chatterbait. its discouraging but it doesnt stop me from trying. i need to find a better spot! sorry for ranting..

no need to apologize ... ranting is what forums are for... i was just stating that what you need most man is up to you but if you want an opinion on gear this is the place to go... I'm a gear head... I like collecting new gear as much or maybe more as much as fishing lol so... the reel would be an easy choice for me.. but you could be different..

I would pinch pennies for a while to save up for the new curado which is  a green citica, or the revo stx that is a dressed up sx model. Go to a national chain that offers a return policy and try everything.

the new curado which is a green citica,

Boy, you never fail to amuse.

Whoops I forgot it might be more comfy on the hands, a couple of bearings, and it has the same six pin brake the citica has. ;D SOS.

So if I get this reel what line should I get? Remember I only really fish bass trout and panfish, and I might go cat fishing every once in a while.

AND should I keep using my 6.5' shakespeare intrepid rod?

Revo s or stx($120 at TW) or a citica would all be nice. Whatever fits your budget really. I personally can't wait for the Abu Garcia Orra sx to hit stores. Next month I think :P

you also mention in your post upgrading.  In reality you are not upgrading.  You are adding to your arsenal.  ;D No get the citica and be done with it. :P

She man O hype and total BS, left out a few ABU round reels and a Pfluger  , not to mention some of the REVO line upand the Diawa Advantage, which frequently can be found right around the 150 mark
