Need advice on which hook sharpener to get.

Featured Replies

Some of you please give me the scoop on which hook sharpener I need to get and how much I need to pay for it. I need one real bad!

Don't know much about them so I don't know which are good and which are not so good. thanks

You would be better off buying new hooks and split ring pliers than trying to sharpen old ones. IMHO.

I agree.  I have had three different hook sharpeners, and I sold them all on ebay.  They were garbage.  You don't have to break the bank and get Owner or Gammies, you can find suitable sharp hooks at BPS for as much as you would pay in a sharpener, batteries, frustration, and time lost...

I have to disagree with the previous posts. There are perfectly good hooks which can be brought to a high degree of sharpness with just a couple of strokes of a file. This could apply to hooks on new lures which just need a little touching up or sharp hooks which have gone a tad dull after catching a couple. I see no reason to toss them.

I use a couple of files of this general design:

I've used one of these for years.

But, I don't sharpen any hooks for plastics. The Owner's and Gammy's that I use are sharper out of the package than you can get them with a hand sharpener, and are cheap enough to replace when the points get damaged.

I do sharpen the hooks on jigs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, etc. I'll also sharpen dulled trebles on cranks when out on the water, but I'll replace them later.

Cheers,

GK

+1

Although some hooks can be sharpened, most of today's hooks should not be sharpened, they should be replaced.

why shouldnt they be sharpened ,ive never heard that before?i always file mine and have had no probs keeping them sharp

Many of todays hooks are chemically sharpened, using a file can weaken or destroy the physical integrity of the hook point. Some hook points are "broad points" and cannot be sharpened without destroying the design:  http://www.xpointhooks.com/
