Another Leader-to-Braid thread

Recommended Posts

Normally, when I'm tying a fluoro leader to my Fireline and/or PowerPro, I use the Uni-Uni knots. Haven't had a serious problem with it, but then a friend sent me this video on the Alberto knot. Has anyone used this variation of the Albright? Any advantages/disadvantages over the Uni-Uni? Thanks. ;)

There are no disadvantages and the knot really

shines when line diameters are different. For

same diameter fluorocarbon or copolymer lines,

the Blood Knot is my choice.

I used the Uni-to-uni for a while, and then for some reason made the switch to the Alberto. I noticed the knot was smaller, but that could very well have been that i got better a knot tying. I haven't had an issue with it, and can now do it pretty quickly. Until I find something better, I'm sticking with the alberto. Try it out. What's the worst that can happen, you loose a 8 lb small mouth? LOL.

I used the Albright for fly-fishing applications a lot -good knot. And I  like the look of this "Alberto" variation -pretty nifty. Haven't tried it though.

For mono to braid with conventional gear I originally used the double Uni's, but have since (couple of seasons now) found the J-Knot to be MUCH faster to tie well.

I tried the Alberto.  I don't know what I did wrong, but it cost me a slender pointer.  Since it made a nice small knot I am going to use it on my tube rod until I am confident I am tying it correctly.

With the uni-to-uni, you have to retie over time as it weakens; I have yet to have an Alberto fail on me.  The size is pretty similar (or I can't tell which is smaller) but the Alberto is noticeably stronger.

I use the uni to uni on my swimbait rig..55 # braid to 12# fluro..I think I'll give this a knot a try.

Also, braid is hard to cut clean with the clippers and siccors I have, what do you guys use..?

I always use a sharp pocket knife...

I've been doing a bunch of testing with leader connections the past couple weeks and the one disadvantage I've found is that if you don't cross the back wraps in sync with the forward wraps they'll end up weakening the knot by cutting the braid on itself costing you about 20% or so in ultimate breaking strength.

Advantages are fairly easy to tie, a single knot instead of two and good with the larger diameter braids. Also a very strong knot when tied correctly.

As for cutting tools, best I've found so far is a small pocket sized pair of diagonal wire snips.
