Braid size

Featured Replies

When selecting braid for your baitcaster do you have to take the smaller diameter into consideration to make sure your setup works correctly?

Say your reel is rated that 12lb test is the recommended size, (assuming that the standard is listed by the size of typical mono diameter) will a braid with the equivalent diameter of 8lb mono be too small?  The braid, even tough the diamter of 8lb mono is 30lb test.  Should you step up to braid?  Or does the technique it is being used for and not exceeding the recommended diameter size, more so the deciding factor?

i would use fireline braid in 40 lb test and up.anything less may digg in.other braids you have to be 50 and up.save light braids for spinning rods.

I try to use braid that is the recomended diameter of the baitcaster.  I feel it works better IMO anyway

Ok then, with a spinning set up, with a reel rated for say 8lb - 200 yards, do you use the 30lb test braid since it is the diameter of 8lb?

I mentioned this before on other reel capacity threads:

there is no recommended pound test rating for any reel, the AMOUNT (length) of a certain mono line size it will hold is what is stated on the reel and packaging. You can use a smaller line size or a larger line size, only the amount will be affected. You can put weedeater cord on a fishing reel if you want-it won't hold much though.

X 2 what Wayne said..

I use 55 lb Diawa Samuri braid on my swimbait rig, same dia. as 12 lb mono.

I think depending on the application, you could spool up with whatever you wanted. I've had 8lb on one of my baitcasters, and it worked fine.

The only time I would Not go to heavy is on a spinning reel, i.e. the 2500, then you want to stay under 10lb test if your using mono.

haha yeah I have weedeater line on my spinning reel. It's great for flipping(because thats all that will fit)but I set the spool up so I could bump the head and it feeds out line.It also edges sidewalks well. ;D
