I keep seeing rods that's say telescopic or retractable butt section. My question is is there any difference or are they the same? Also what do they mean? Are they 2 piece rods or does the rod retract inside its self like a telescope would do?

I'd much rather use a telescopic rod for heavy cover than a two piece.

A telescopic rod basically has the blank sliding within another section of the blank, just above the handle. The Kistlers and St. Croix LTB rods I have used were plenty sensitive, and they compressed from almost 8' to less than 7', so they fit in the rod locker easier.

You can see where the two sections join on this Kistler, about 8" above the reel seat.  This rod folds up to 6'6".  Very convenient.

Thanks for the help. I was wondering about sensitivity I would imagine a one piece is more sensitive because there's  no seperation in the blank. The problem is every flippin stick I like the most is telescopic. So now I'm wondering if I should go with some of my second choices that are 1 piece. 

you won't be able to tell the difference.there is enough of the two sections contacting each other that the rod is strong and sensitive at the same time.

I agree 110%. I have several telescoping rods including two, older USA made All Stars.  Very good action, very strong and very convenient to store below deck.

I have two Castaway telescoping rods. 6'10" and 7'6". Like them both a lot.

The 2 rods I like that are telscopic are the kistler micro mag 7'6" and the st croix legend 8'. But I think the 8' might be to long for me. My one piece rods are carrot stix,  st croix 7'3" xtra heavy and I've been looking at the dobyns savvy 7'6". Probably can't go wrong just a matter of pulling the trigger.

Telescopic rods were initially designed to accomodate the rod lockers of the day. The tolerances have to be exact.  Now that most " Pros " run 20 to 21 foot rigs with lockers that accept 8 foot sticks, many manufactures are moving to one piece sticks.  Look at the increase in the number of 7'9" and 7'11" sticks offered now.  One piece rods are lighter and less expensive to manufacture. I run an 18 foot boat and have to leave my one piece flippin sticks on the deck when I trailer it to an from.  I am of the belief, if you can transport it, go one piece but telescopic rods are more than fine.
