Spool/ Sesativity Adjustment HELP NEEDED

Recommended Posts

To avoid a long and emabarassing story, the spool adjustment knob on my Quantum Mantra (MT500CX) fell of and into the lake (as did the contents laying beneath.  This has been over two years ago since it happened and since I have had numerous friends to fix this reel for me.  Intially, I ordered parts directly from qunatum (i.e. bearing, a new adjustment knob, etc.) and some other things.  However, after adjustment still does not work.  I do not want to part with this reel because it was one of my favorites and it didnt have much lake time on it when it first broke.

If anyone could provide some insight as to whats going on here please let me know!

Thanks!!

Can you provide more details? What exactly does it do/not do that you believe it should?

It's busted and can't be fixed?

Just a guess.

Yes sorry I was incredibly short on detail there.  Well to sum the situation up, it did not get smashed/broken but rather the sensativity knob was incredibly loose, as i primarily used it to cast weightless worms etc., and after a number of trips in the boat i think the knob got to the point were it nearly felt off. So i picked it up off the deck and made a cast, and the knob and whatever is inside there fell out and into the lake..

As for performance details, the sensativity can no longer be adjusted.  Basically, turning the knob does nothing.  I want to say that something was wrong with the knob that I ordered as it does not resemble the old knob that was on the road but looks more like the one's on my accurists (which I ordered directly from Quantum).  I think there may be a difference in the thread or something because the amount of torque/ or "turn" needed to turn the knob to its "tightest" point is not much.  Regardless, no turning has any effect as to its adjustability.  Hope this helps!!

Likewise, even if the knob was incorrect I still cant imagine why i would have no impact on the sensativity at all.  What exactly could "fall out" from the knob being removed that would make this unfunctional? I viewed the reel schematics and it looked like I ordered everything that appeared to have been missing!!

starting from the bearing out

bearing SW 117-01  $8.46

spool tension shim QW o32-04 $0.83

spool tension collar QW 081-01 $1.22

Spool cusion washer QW 082-01 $0.85

Tension Knob   HV 033-03

Now working backwards, the cushion washer is a rubber disk, it goes in the bottom of the cap. put a dot of grese in the cap to hold it in place and then a dot of grease on the cusion, next the collar lays on the cusion. put a drop of reel oil in the collar and then add the tension shim, which is the small disk, into the inset area of the collar, then with the bearing in the side plate, screw the cap on , the collar should center itself in the cap.

KSbasser.. thanks for the input! Where can I order these parts? It appears to be everything that i previously ordered but I am willing to try again to get this reel working.  Any suggestions on where to purchase?

KSbasser is right on. The parts can be ordered direct from Quantum: http://www.quantumfishing.com/CustomerService/replacementparts.aspx

Okay.. I will order them again.  I have already ordered these parts but last time I did it I ordered directly from quantum representative over the phone.  Maybe something went wrong, so I will re-order in hopes of getting the right/all the parts needed to fix this problem.  When the parts come in I will keep everyone updated with the end product.  Also, what kind of grease should I use for the cushion and the knob.  I am a novice when it comes to reel schematics/ repair so I am greatly appreciative of everyones help!!

Thanks guys and I will post some pics during the process to provide some insight for future newbie's like myself!

If you think you have each of those parts, check the order of them in the cap. Is the large rubber disc in the bottom of the cap? Is the small disc pressed into the brass collar? Is the flat side of the brass collar against the large rubber disc? The brass collar holds that small disc against the end of the spool shaft. The large rubber disc is a cushion between the cap and the collar. Any reel grease will work. It just helps to stick the parts together and prevents corrosion. You will also want to put a drop of reel oil on the small disk or a drop on the end of the spool shaft, put one drop one the bearing and spin it to distribute the oil inside the bearing. Also, is your o ring on the outside of the threaded part in good shape? That keeps the cap snug but shouldn't be causing your problem.

Come friday when I get the driveway to my garage plowed (we have over 1ft+ of snow here and looking to get another foot tommorrow!!) I will get the reel out of storage to do some further investigation. In the mean time, I did order the new parts (I am so fed up with this reel that I want it done the right way this time).  Hopefully, I will get the right cap too because I am about 100% confident that the cap they did send me was not the right one.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.  I got all my parts in from Quantum tonight and put everything back together and BANG!! It is in perfectly working order (once again) and now we just need to get the snow out of the forecast to start fishing again!
