id like to buy a ml power, fast action, 3 or 4 piece spinning rod to take with me on hiking trips. i was hoping there was a st croix avid 3 piece but i dont think there is. can you recommend a good rod manufacturer that i could look into?

Cabela's XML travel rod when heavily discounted (of course).  I haven't used my two yet, but I think they will do quite well.

I have two Browning Safari travel rods that I really like. One is a three piece, 7' MH/F baitcaster and the other is a four piece 6' L/F spinning rod. Both rods have performed well for me. BPS has a large selection of these rods and I'm sure you could find one you like. They sell for around $100.

The Premier is 3 or 4 piece spinning rods that sell for about $160. The Triumph is 4 piece spinning rods for about $100. I thought this may interest you since you were looking for an Avid.

I have a browning safari travel 4 piece rod, and it worked very well during my camping trip. I was fishing near the camp ground for sun fish and crappie, the rod preformed very well.  Got it used at a local flea market for about 50 bucks.

yeah man, i was pretty excited when i saw the premier line had travel rods until i looked at the price. 160 bucks for a premier? ouch!

might go with the triumph. looks like different guides and a soft case is the only difference between the two.

2 piece would be ideal except that would mean carrying 2 3ft sections which would be snagging branches as it will not fit in the backpack. maybe i can find a lightweight hard case for it though...

That reel is a little small, but it would work.  I have a Stradic 1000FG on a 6' M/F I use for skipping light stuff under docks, and slider rigs, and I'd really prefer a 2500 series, simply for the bigger spool and less twist.  I run 6# Silverthread AN40 on this rod.

yeah i figure i can pack in a few extra ounces and use a stradic 2500.

good idea, midnighthrasher, except for two reasons. one being that i would now have two 3.25' halves to deal with instead of two 3' halves like i would have if i went with a 6 footer like mentioned above. that would get snagged on approx .053% more branches.

second reason is that if i go with a 2-piece i could get a st. croix avid like i mentioned in the opening post and wouldnt have to settle for a compre.

I have one of the Browning Safari spinning rods, the 7' they rate as Med/Fast, 3-piece. I'd rate it as Medium Light/Fast. One of my favorite rods for smaller cranks and jerkbaits and topwaters. Although a 3-piece, it's very sensitive.
