Opinions on Bass Pro shop Extreme series baitcasters

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at a couple of combos for my second rod/reel. I have a Rick Clum combo that has done well. But I was wondering what you guys think. I'm about to buy a HB 798csi so I don't have the big bucks to spend. About 180 is my budget for the setup. Suggestions? Need a 7' worm rod.

Thanks in advance

Jeff

I just bought one of the '10 Extremes while they were on sale during the spring classic. Haven't really wrung it out yet, just a couple of outings, but at this point I like my last year's and previous year's models better. They are no CiticaE or Revo S though. Check Ebay for the previous two, better reels for the money in my opinion.

I'll look at the Revo S. But how do you set the centrifical brake. I don't want anything I have to take apart on the water to set. I'm a newbie and don't need the added distraction/frustration. Its bad enough I cant catch fish..... ;D

but Im gonna fix that even if I have to throw dynamite in the water....lol

Open it up when you first get it.......

Set the brakes to the "Y" pattern....one on-one off, one on-one off, one on-one off. You'll never have to open it up again, just use the tension knob for less or more windy conditions.

Mine doesn't have the new "pitch" system braking, BTW. If you get the '09 model or before they will be the conventional six-pin system.

I bought a Extreme to put on my BPS Crankin Stick.  I love it.  I have never used any of the Shimano reels, but the Extreme is awesome.  It casts very smooth and very long, it reels even smoother.

If money is tight, nothing is wrong with that reel at all.

I have 3 Extremes and 2 Pro Qualifiers that my wife and I use regularly. I am in my third year of fishing with the Extremes with no problems. For the money you can't go wrong IMHO.

The PQs have both centrifugal and magnetic braking. You can set the Centrifugal once and then adjust the magnetic as needed. It is a great system for noobie or old fisherman like me. Good luck.

BPS has their new Rick Clunn combos on sale for $160 and their Pro Qualifier Rods are on sale for $90 so a lot of good possibilities out their right now.

Later, :)

I have 2 Extreme combos and love them!  Really the best bet for money that I have seen.  However, for just $30 (think $189)  I wanted to upgrade to a pro-qualifier combo, and boy is the PQ really nice.  Took me a while to figure out why the PQ was not casting that great, then realized it had those centrifugal pegs unlocked.  I locked those down, and boy does it cast a smooth country mile.

I think either of the BPS combos give some of the best bang for the buck...

I have one of the extremes and dont really care for it that much. for the money try the academy H20 reels, i have two of those and like it better than the BPS extremes, but not near as much as my Shimano's. Just my opinion.
