Tacklebox Must-Haves

Featured Replies

I'm about to be (willingly) possessed by the bait monkey and stock up on some lures.  What are some that you guys consider as must-haves?  I'm pretty good on soft plastics and crankbaits, but feel free to chime in on those as well.  Areas I'm somewhat lacking are spinnerbaits, swimbaits, and jigs.  Keep in mind, I have some level of restraint; something inside of me refuses to pay over $8-10 for a single lure.

I have a lot of topwaters (my favorite type of fishing ;)) but more is always good.

EDIT: Oh and of course, terminal tackle is welcome.

Hopefully this will help anyone else who may be rebuilding or restocking their tacklebox as well.

Since I have an "affinity" for Hula Poppers and Jitterbugs I usually insure that I have a nice supply of them in various sizes and colors (but black seems to work in most instances so it is the single color I'd recommend over all others). I also like crankbaits and have quite a few of those as well in all sizes and colors.

Cavitron Buzzbaits

Tru-Tungsten Worm Weights

Gamakatsu EWG Offset Hooks

Strike King Premier Plus Spinnerbaits

Finesse Jigs

Flipping Jigs

Jig Trailers

Roboworm straight tail worms

It might be area specific, but for me (up in the northeast) I always have a panic box" along for tough situations, which includes:  Jigging Spoons for when the bass aren't biting and I move to deep water, Original Rapala Floaters, Suspending Jerkbaits, Rat'L'Trap type baits, and 4 hand poured straight Worms (dark colors) with 1/8 ounce Slider Spider jigs.

Shaky head jig heads / Trick worms

3/8oz football head jig / trailers

Senkos and tons of them.

k cheap and a great lure for big bass and lots of them  bitsy bug jigs only about 2-4 bucks     get a few of them and some trailers for them   and then stock up on your senkos and curly tail worms   these 2 baits are the foundation of a lot of anglers   rebel makes alot of topwater baits at a fair price also

I would buy 10 Strike King Bitsy Flip jigs.  5 Black and Blue 1/4oz and 5 Olive Green 1/4oz ones.  They are $1.59 from ***.com so you will not go broke on them.  I prefer to use them with a 2.5" craw chunk from Gander mountain.  They have a black and blue swirl color and a green swirl color as well.  It is a fantastic bait to learn how to fish a jig and it catches a ton of fish!  Fish the green one in clear water and the black and blue one any where.

What about the old standby.....

Rat-L-Trap Chrome/Blue or Chrome/Black

For a couple that you won't find in every tackle box, try a Lewis Slapstick and a Heddon Moss Boss.

Sharp replacement hooks.

Split rings.

GOOD split ring pliers.

Rapala countdowns.

Fresh first aid kit.

Fresh sun screen.

Fresh bug spray. Ultrathon.

Your on your own with the spinner and swim baits.

Make sure you get enough split rings so you can add a split ring to the rear treble on your topwater lures.
