Crappy Scales

Featured Replies

I bought a cheap Berkley Scale last year and it didn't even last 3 trips. I guess cheap is what I got. I read reviews on basspro.com and it seems that there really isn't any "good" scales out there from what I see. Is there any that you use that are accurate and reliable?

There are plenty of good scales out there, many IGFA certifiable.

I have a Shimano spring scale that can be PERFECTLY calibrated for general use. BPS has a similar scale, in-house brand. If you want the best spring scale (IGFA certifiable) it's the Boga Grip: http://www.boga-grip.com/

Do you have a link to the one you have, so I can get an idea?

Shimano scales:  http://www.fishermansheadquarters.com/equip_scale_shimano.htm

I have the 50 lb version because I also fish for striper. I would recommend the 20 lb scale for bass fishing, it's easier to read and broken down into more usable increments.

I read all the reviews as well and as far as I can tell the boga is as good as they come.I'm saving to get one myself.(plus a float)My wife would never forgive me for throwing a $100+ overboard, lol.

when you say it can be perfectly calibrated for general use, do you mean that you can manually calibrate it, or that it comes dead on?

Description of the Shimano Spring Scale:

A large, screw-in plug in the bottom portion of the scale allows for precise calibration with free weights. Once set, the scale does not loosen or change. I use a plastic grocery bag starting with 5 lbs, then 10, 15 and 20. I only check it occasionally and have never had to readjust the scale. The scale has a rubber "keeper" that allows you to weigh the fish, remove the fish and read the scale. Because mine is 50 lbs, exact pounds can be measured but not exact ounces.

Heres a few MAJOR SCALES;; oopsss misunderstood the question

      my mistake

I invested in a couple high quality scales made by Chatillon 20 years ago. They are still perfect. Easily calibrated and solid. But not cheap. I have the IN10 and IN30.

The key to accuracy regardless of price is in calibration, and re-checking every now and then.

I use known weights -like dumbbells and check at 1#, 2#, 4#,6#, etc... A really good scale should not deviate at different weights. If it does, say at high and low end (common in lower priced scales) than you should know how much and make mental adjustments.
