Well i'm not new to fishing, but i'm just starting to really get into learning all the different techniques. I mostly fish for bass, crappie, and trout in ponds and lakes here in western nc. My current setups are a 6' 9" kistler magnesium Medium heavy with a quantam energy e760 baitcaster, a 6' 6" Medium, fast, BPS extreme xps spinning rod with a pflueger supreme 8035, and another extreme xps 6' light with a abu garcia cardinal 101. Just wanting to know whats the best for what, ie plastics, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, crankbaits, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Specifically:

Technique specific rods are for "enthusiasts".

Almost all your fishing can be done with just

one rod. Beyond that, you only "need" three rods:

Spinning: 6 1/2' or 7', M or MH, Fast Action

(soft plastics and light lures)

Baitcasting: MH or H, Fast Action

(jigs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and all single hooks)

Baitcasting: MH, Moderate Action

(all treble hook lures)

I have a question for RW, but any one can answer, you said medium heavy or heavy on single hook lures, does that apply to carolina rigged worms or would medium action be better? I am asking because I have resently maid carolina rigged worms my first choice, when I am not on the river.

Carolina rigged worms should definitely be used with at least a rod of MH power.  Some may not agree, based on the weight, or whatnot, but I consider Carolina rigs a "power" technique.  When you are fishing deep ledges and cover with heavy line, and weights up to an ounce or more, you will want the backbone or a MH or H rod. 

Don't be mistaken, just because a rod is suited to heavier tackle and techniques does not mean it can't be sensitive.

mh is good for your thicker hooks, >1/4oz lures, heavier cover

medium will cover 1/4oz and down

the light will probably be good for very small jigs, small cranks, light in-line spinners

do all of your rods have fast action?

if any are moderate or mod/fast id use that one for crankbaits.
