Low Memory Line

Recommended Posts

Hey Gang,

I am looking for a low to zero memory line that won't blow a hole in my wallet. I am using Suffix Smoke Green now, it's a good line but the 'low memory' advertisement isn't as accurate as I had hoped. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

-Snogle

Roadwarrior's suggestion is about as close to no memory as you'll ever get, especially the 8lb test.

I fish braid b/c its amazing for no memory, no twists, few to no tangles. I like P-Line, but Power Pro is sweet (just more). You can get 150 yards for $10-15.

I tie a leader of P-Line floroclear to the end of it, about 3 feet long. The P-Line Floroclear is a copoly line with a fluorocarbon coating helping to make it less visible in water and the copoly line is stiffer/more sensitive than mono. 300 yards of this stuff is $7 at Bass Pro.

Power Pro 15# is fantastic... I just can't see it. ;)

Red Cajun 8# that has been spooled properly and treated is also elite.

I use Sufix Elite for all my moving baits setups, and have found it to be very good as long as you keep it moving. Any slack will coil up a bit.

Same with YoZuri Ultra Soft. Fine it you keep it moving, but coils up when any slack is present. I'm presently using YZUS on two rods;  a jig rod and a T-rig rod, where  I keep contact with the bait at all times.

For all slack line applications. like senkos, ikas, flukes, etc, I use Trilene XL. It is the king of low memory lines.

KVD line conditioner is HIGHLY recommended. After you've filled up your reel, spray down the spool with KVD. You want enough on there to soak in. If the KVD is dripping off the spool slightly, you've got it just about right. Allow it to dry overnight before using. Don't forget to shake up the bottle of KVD very well before applying.

As far as flouro line goes; I have two reels spooled up with Trilene 100%. I quit using flouro a couple of years ago. I decided to give it another chance. So far so good. The 100% exhibits a lot less spool memory than any other flouro I've ever tried. And I tried "em all before giving up on it. Use the KVD on this also.

Trilene XL is very low-memory, especially for a mono. Don't get me wrong it will have a little memory coming off the spool but after a few casts it will straighten out. Powerpro is very good at not coiling up and as far as I know is the best low-memory line

Trilene XL is too brittle and degrades quickly, even if your fishing open water. Original Stren and P - Line CX Premium are by far the best lower memory monos that still have some strength to them. They have a little memory but it's more than manageable.

Pike,

Finding a good line that does not have a memory is always a challenge.

Some lines work for some guys while others swear by another brand.

On spinning reels, spool only half of the spool with line as this will help reduce line twist. At least it works for me.

On a baitcaster, I usually use mono for treble hook baits and have to constantly change it out after a week or two as it will curl badly.

Flouro line, like the Yo-Zuri Ultra Soft and the Segar lines do well for me.

So I suggest experiment with different lines and find the one you like best.  ;)

Any of the uncoated or unfused superlines are zero memory. A zero or true low memory single filament nylon/fluorocarbon) line does not exist. Some single filament lines have less memory (usually the blended co-polymers) than others. McCoy and XL are some of the lowest memory single filament lines.

The smallest diameters in any brand and model of single filament line has the least memory (6# vs 10#).

McCoy Mean Green Mono. Give this line a try. I left the 6 and 8 pounds on the spinning reel for over 6 months at my girlfriends place over the winter, got them back, took it out and I was surprised it had absolutely no memory at all. The line was still very strong as well.

It's a great line that I believe more people should give a try. I don't know about the braid or other stuff from McCoy, but the Mean Green Mono is great.

I have a bottle of KVD unused as well. ;)

I wished that Roadwarrior or one of the members here would give this line a comparison to the YoZuri Ultra soft that I hear so much about. I'm really interested in knowing how well it fares.
