Thinkin bout buying a glass crankbait rod

Featured Replies

I don't throw alot of deep divers so is it worth it ? I have a crucial tc4 crankbait rod which works well for the minus ones I usually throw but sometimes I throw a lipless too. Who makes a good one for 150 bux or less ? I dont wanna spend a ton on a rod that I know I wont be using alot. I was lookin at the powells on TW.

I would think the same rod might work but sure others will chime in as I'm using the same glass rod I have for both types of lures.

gander mountain has a glass rod for $30 its the gander mountain advantage glass rod

American Rodsmith David Fritts model. Also I have an Allstar that has performed wonderfully.

X2. The browning silaflex at BPS is another excellent choice that is only about $40.

I would be remiss not to mention the BPS crankin' stick, or the St. Croix Premier Glass Crankbait Rod.

I have the powell 703 glass cranking rod and the tip broke off when I was landing a 2 lber ther other day. Loved it until that happened. I had only had it for like 2 weeks though.

I looked into the Powell and Dobyns rods and ended getting a Lamiglas Excel (XL705Glass). It's only $99 and a great value. I started fishing with it a couple of weeks ago and really enjoy it.

Someone else suggested the same rod. I have been considering one but no local shops have them so I cant handle one before I buy.

fishing with a glass rod for cranks is an acquired taste. some hate it while others (like me) love it. i ordered my first glass crankin' rod sight unseen and when it arrived i thought it was ridicuously heavy and noodly and thought i'd just turn around and return it. i didn't but then the rod sat unused for 6 months. finally, i decided to sell it but i thought i'd better fish it one time so i'd know what it was like. i caught numerous fish that day on the rod and didn't miss one strike and landed every single fish. the glass slowed my reaction time and allowed enough time for the fish to get the crank fully into its mouth and the parabolic action kept the fish pinned. previously, i hated fishing with cranks because of the huge percentage of short strikes and how easily they come unbuttoned with those small treble hooks on my stiff graphite rods. i was sold. in the years since, i have since tried numerous graphite and graphite-composite crankbait rods but, to me, they're too sensitive ;) of course, YMMV.

given your budget, i'd go for the lamiglas excel XL705glass. i've checked them out at the store and they feel amazingly similar to my beloved lamiglas XCF705R and SR705R cranking rods. i've read that the blanks are actually the same but no one has been able to confirm that.

Theres someone on ebay selling custom made rods from lamiglas skeete reese blanks. They look pretty sweet and are around 165 bux minus bing cashback which is currently at 8 percent so around 150 shipped. How does it compare to the XL ?

If you're interested in a custom I'll make you a good deal and you can pick components. That SR705 blank's not a bad choice for a crankin' stick.

Lamiglass lists different blank models for each of those rods.
