Newbie question here:

Is it ok to connect some line onto a spinning reel that already has some on it? If so, what knot should I use to connect the new line to the exisiting line.  The line in question is 10# mono.

Yes , use a blood knot.

At the top left hand corner of page are  "Fishing Articles" , click on it , click onto "Fishing Tips and Tactics", click on "Equipment" , click on "Knots " , it will show you how to tie a blood knot.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it should even be done at all.  Now off to practice a blood knot!

I use the blood knot a lot and it works well... If you ever need to tie braid to a leader though I have fallen in love with Sebile knot. It is not the easiest to tie, but when you get it right it has 100% strength retention and the lowest profile of any knot i have tried.  You can find a video tutorial for tying in on youtube.

As I get older, and the arthritis in the fingers gets worse, things that were relatively easy in the past, aren't anymore. Knot tying is one. For some reason, I just can't tie a blood know anymore and now use uni-to-uni.

I need to have someone show me how to tie a uni to uni knot. A lot of you guys say it is easy to tie, and I've seen pictures of a uni knot being tied, but putting two together just doesn't work for me. I can tie a blood knot or albright knot with no problem. There is a possibility my brain is not wired quite right... :-/

I would suggest not spooling less than 1 1/2 casts worth of new line. Even a well tied knot can hang up and disrupt the line flowing off the spool.

Really good advise. Too shallow in the spool is aggravating.

I just use a piece of tape. That way you don't have the knot in the spool to cause problems. Just make sure it is far enough down into the spool that you won't cast all the line off.

i never tie the lines together on any of my reels.
