Deep Diving Crankbait Rod

Featured Replies

I have been thinking about investing in a nice rod specifically for deep crankbaits (12+ ft). A few caught my attention, the Dobyns Randy McAbee 805 cranking rod, Lamiglas SR 765R, and the Powell 804CB...I am looking for a little longer rod so i can get those cranks out there far and also am looking for a sensitive, but powerful rod. What do you guys think of the rods i suggested? Any others i should check out?

Thanks,

VC

You are looking at three great options. The Lamiglas is a glass blank and if you want glass it's one of the very best on the market. I have the SR705R and it is outstanding but it's glass. There's no argument graphite is lighter and more sensitive. If you are looking for that slower forgiving action go glass. If sensitivity is the driving force go graphite. A buddy of mine swears by the high end Dobyns rods.

check out a shimano compre in medium heavy.  i have been nothing but happy with that rod for my deep cranking.

The longest they make the compre in is a 7' and if i went with Shimano it would be a cumara..

i own the SR 765R paired with a curado e5 and it is absolutely the best deep crankin rod ive ever owned.. its well worth it

What is the big fuss over a glass rod? Can you feel a difference in sensitivity?

the glass rods have a very parabolic bend, which is good for keeping treble hooks from pulling when fighting the fish. however, if you want to throw those deep cranks for a period of time i recommend you go with a lighter rod. you will love one of those dobyns crank sticks.

The Lamiglas SR705R is THE BOMB!

8-)

I have a Crucial CRC-711M.  Great for cranking, and due to it's length you can cast a country mile, which is important when deep cranking as you want to get that bait down and keep it down.

The Tour KVD KVD745M is a very light rod from handling it in BPS over the spring. It's a blend of Fiberglass and graphite and much lighter than I thought it would be.

Don't buy anything shorter than 7'6.

The longer the rod, the longer you cast, the more time you spend in at the bottom in the strike zone. Get the 805 McAbee Rod. Might be the most expensive, but you won't be thinking "man what if I had spent a few more dollars and got the BEST".

Check out St Croix magnum cranker 7' 10" . Great deep cranking rod, sensitive and light..........Al

I completely agree. I do not own the 805, but I do own 5 Dobyns rods and I love each one. I wouldn't even consider purchasing from another company at this point.

Look at the Fenwick HMG GT 710H-MF heavy medium fast rated for 3/8 - 1.5 oz lures.  This rod will handle the biggest deep divers and other lures with big trebles.
